My new toy! An LVT

Hi all,

I have been lucky enough to purchase Phil's LVT. It is a beautiful machine and Phil has looked after it very well. I hope to get it swimming in 6 months.

Here are some photos. By the way, does anyone have any LVT parts they want to sell. :)

The things John has left are in some ways more interesting than what was sold, although most of it is in poor condition outside in the yard.

He does sometimes sell these to collectors so it's worth having a talk to him.

Now that's one impressive looking vehicle!!

Well I'm happy to see it go to a good home. As much as I would had loved to had restored it it was not going to happen in a hurry. Here is another photo we took when we were playing around...

I'm going to try and see if our tractor (via the PTO) can run it around while the engine is getting rebuilt.

What type of oil goes in the transmission? 60? And do you know how much oil?

Hi there Aaron!

Well in 1 of my manuals it states a SAE 60 oil for both the engine and the drive line. Tim Berry passed on this information to me in regards to what type of oil they run in their radial aircraft. And from what he told me it is about 1/2 price to what I am paying for the type of oil I have been useing.

W120 is recommended when the ambient outside temp is 25 celcius on average. It meets SAE - J-1899 and MIL-L-2285. It is an ashless dispersant oil.

Aeroshell oil single grade are ashless dispersant lubricating oils for aircraft piston engines. They are approved by:

Pratt and Whitney Service bulletin No. 1183-S
Curtiss-Wright
Franklin engine company.

Aaron if you are interested drop me a line and we may be able to get it cheaper the more we get.

As for how much you need well for gearbox/diff/final drive you will need atleast 30qts which is about 15lts. Now that for the Stuart so seeing the final drive on the Buff is larger a 20lt drum is probly the way to go.

And when it comes to the engine/air-cleaners you need about the same ammount. So i just got 2x 20lt drums.

30 US Liquid Quarts = 28.39200 Litres
30 US liquid Pints = 14.1960 Litres

Tony, now your just confusing me. So its 14.2 litres, right.

Dunno, Phil said it's 30 Quarts which is 28.4 lt. If he's putting in approx 15lts, maybe it should be 30 US pints? I hate to fire up such a beast to find you have half (or twice!) as much oil as you should. If the gearbox should fail, you'll be minding your p's and q's!

Well I cocked up with my convertions :fry: But anyway the quarts figgures are taken from a manual on the Stuart and the gearbox/diff assembly has a dipstick on the filler tube so you can go wrong if you fill it to the "F" then check again after ur run it to allow for the cooler and lines to fill up.

Well great to that the idea worked. So what was it like to take the beast for a drive and how far did you go in it?

We only took it about 300m. The tractor PTO turns in the opposite direction to the original engine, therefore, we had to have the transmission in reverse to go forward. Dad was a little worried about going too far in reverse at this stage.

The tracks are still too tight from rust, but apart from that it when well.
