Ambulance at Dubbo

That in my opinion has got to be one of the best, most original, good condition vehicles going round. When i was there about the middle fo the year i got a stack of photo's of it so if anyone wants more detailed photo's, feel free to email me and i`ll forward them along.
Before the auction i believe it could be bought for the right price, but was not to be included for general sale. Did you get a chance to look in the back? The original stretchers are still there! Thanks for the pics. Ian. |

Interesting to see the stencil under the bonnet with a 1943 date. These vehicles weren't delivered until 1945.

Ambo
One of these was advertised for sale for ages , in various magazines like Unique Cars , down around Geelong district , some 5-8 years ago . I think it was Hugh Thompsons spare vehicle . I don't know what became of it , he may still have it ? Appears that nobody wanted it . Don't know how complete it was, the seller wasn't asking much for it .

Hugh's ambo
That's right, Mike it was Hugh's spare which had been cladded in aluminium and was a bit rough. I helped him collect it from Portarlington in 1975.

30 vs 60
Technically these are 30 CWT - they have the small steering ends and light steering box as well as 16" wheels. Their data plates are stamped as F60S (60 cwt) however.
As for the light steering and small steering ends of course all cab 12 Fords had this as well as a number of cab 13s. |
f30-f60s?
keith did you guys not have f3o fords,or were they redesignated under f60
i do realise about f30 ambulance,but what about g/s etc?? i do know f30 was discontinued after about 2-3 yrs i would be interested to know the australian situation on this there are lot of f30 fords here in nz all rated 3 ton 2cwt or there about. |
Medium wheelbase Fords
We didn't have very many F60S compared with the long wheelbase and 15cwt versions.
Many of them were used as tippers, not sure whether we even had any bodied as GS. There were some other F60S special versions such as Trucks, Direction Finding. |

The only timber I could see in the body frame was a 1" thick batten that ran around the rear of the body. Unfortunately, that batten is what the hinges for the rear doors are bolted to, and on this truck the timber had rotted and the bolts for the hinges had pulled through. The rear doors were wired in place and could not be opened, but a peek in the louvres saw what the nurse saw ( :eek: !), and all the stretcher racks are still there. |

Salesman Bob's Ambulance
Yep that's our ambulance. Thanks for the picture Keefy, it reminds me of what it looked like before all the spare parts and other stuff got loaded into the back. One day it will be back on the road with its new engine and stainless brake components.

SKIN ?
I always thought the skin on these was doped canvas . Looking at the pics it appears to be some type of thin fabric material over what looks like cardboard or cheap masonite ?
Pity is has been left out in the elements . I believe the Adelaide ex AWM example has been re-skinned in metal or some non original material . Hugh Thompsons example is an absolute veteran of many rallies , I first saw it in 76 during the Fort Queenscliff trip . Lot 17 ( as it's known as ) must have clocked up a lot of miles in the last 30 years . He had the engine rebuilt a few years back and it has attended Corowa quite a few times . Hugh bought it back in the early 1960's at a Govt. auction ( lot 17 ) . It would have to be a record ? The longest time anyone has owned a ex WW2 Ambulance that is still on the road ? The CMF here ( army reserve ) still had these in service as late as 1960 . Mike |

Mike I think it was a light canvas over masonite.

The Dubbo Ambulance had an inner lining of plywood, small timber battens around the framing, then an outer panel of masonite, covered by a light canvas.
