CMP Book

Survey question; What information would you want to see in a photo book on CMPs?

I am thinking of doing a photo book on CMPs. Needless to say, there must be some text. What would you suggest. Model number, name, number manufactured, technical specifications, 'in action' photos...?

Hanno Spoelstra 17-09-06 12:48

Yes, model numbers, names, numbers manufactured, technical specifications.

But more so: information and photos about where and when the various types of CMPs were used. Pete Asby's pic of a C15A 12 cab with round hip ring in Normandy is the sort of thing restorers and modellers are lookin for, I think.

This is a mere shot across the bow; please let's elaborate on this subject.

H.

I agree with Hanno that where possible the data includes where they were used. Other then that just what they are and the basic statistics.

@servicepub

Be sure you woun't forget the usage of CMPs after the war in Switzerland. They were used until about 1966.

Books

My book has been drafted but let's say that firstly commercial considerations have cropped up.

My colleague is now geared-up for mass scanning and enhancement at last.

My concept for David's book is an historical overview of CMPs. This would be one of four titles in a small series that I am doing ("Tools of the Trade" which is already in print, "Secret Weapons of the Canadian Army" which is at the printers right now, "CMPs in Canadian Service" which I hope to see completed within the next two years (this is the book that I have asked David to do), and "Camouflage and Markings of Canadian Vehicles" which, right now, is a cooperative venture with myself, Steve Guthrie and Don Dingwall. This last book won't be ready for several years as the research continues.

My question on this title is that I want to do a photo book on Canadian CMPs (or maybe a broader book which will include pre-and post-war MV in Canada). I hesitate to put too much text because, quite frankly, I want this to be concentrated more on photos. I question whether tech specs should be included. If they are, should they be the same that already appear in Gregg's books and other pubs (AEDB reports, etc...) or should they just be the minimum, i.e., 3-ton, 6x6 plus wheel-base and engine size.

My photo source is the Canadian Archives where I have located all of the photos used by Gregg, and more! Most of the photos show two views. There are also many more trailers. Previous experience in obtaining photos from individuals on the web have been difficult. Photos that are scanned at low-res for web purposes are useless for commercial publication, and photos scanned from other books lead to both technical (Moire pattern) and legal (copyright) issues, so I find myself forced to use whatever I can find at Archives.

The book will not be aimed at MLU'ers who already know more about the subject than the average enthusiast will ever learn. I target my books to militaria shops, hobby shops and museums and don't want to turn them off with a book that is too technical.

As much as I would like to include a mini-history of each detailing when they started/stopped manufacture, who used them and where, etc... This would entail extensive research - and I'm not convinced that I will uncover that level of detail in the surviving archives.

More dialogue is encouraged.

Clive,

As a scale-modeler I would be interested in good quality "period" pictures, a basic Technical sheet (engine, wheelbase, basis measurements, tyresize and such) and maybe some shots out of Technical Manuals.

The issues that Hanno pointed out are also of interest, but like you said, some require a lot of research. Nonetheless I would be very interested in more pictures of Monkey-face CMP's in mainland europe, late war pictures of 8cwt CMP's etc.

Often pictures tell more than words and I can only dream of a book full of pictures, like the ones you just posted. Great shots!

Alex

p.s. You don't happen to have found anymore shots of the Ford F60H Wrecker in the archives, yet? I know at least three people here in Holland, who are desparately looking for these!!

Alex,

I have a bunch of wrecker photos but wouldn't recognise one from another. Can you post a photo and I will try to match?

And at least one more scale modeler in the Czech Republic ;)

Concerning the CMP book, what about scale drawings? I know that it is particular interest of scale modelers but I am sure that these guys are potential buyers of such books.

I know the Gregg´s books and from the point of view of scale modelers there is lack of details or detail views, especially of those normally hidden - spring hangers, engines, gearboxes, all those chassis and engine linkage, cab inside details etc. All such information makes the book more valuable from the point of view of scale modelers.

I am looking forward to have such a book in my library,
Jan. :salute:

The history, development, and prototypes would make a fascinating chapter, as would units in which they served and theatres of operation. Of course, pics and specifications are de rigeur. Looking forwrd to owning a signed copy!

Clive,

I have just seen the draft and it looks great; just minor text and the emphasis on the pictures. Are you familiar with the "Allied-Axis" photobooks? I like those, because they have large size pictures (often period pictures) and minimal text, just like your Draft.

To answer your question; attached you will find two pictures of the Ford F60H 6x4 wrecker, one with cab 11 and the old style wrecking body and the other with cab 13 and the later more simple body.

Any pictures of these 6 wheelers, especially from behind and details of the section between the wrecking gear and cab would be very valuable to Dirk, Stefan and me.

Serial Numbers

As to Census Numbers, I have published these for British orders for FORD, CHEVROLET, GMC, DODGE and FARGO online, at least those I am aware of. It would be a small matter to print out sheets to add in but these are always changing as more information comes in. Of course our friends in Tilburg already publish an excellent book!

Alex,

In my current photo files I have Diamond T 6x4 and CMP 4x4 wreckers. I still have about 100 photos to reproduce from Archives so I may still get lucky.

Clive

Clive,

Thanks for your reply. Pictures of the F60H wrecker are very scarce, so any would be appreciated.

Please keep us updated about the CMP book progress.

The M.E.E. or Mechanical Engineering Establishment at Farnborough, Hampshire, tested a Ford F.60H 6 x 4 DND-pattern truck loaned or seconded to the Ministry of Supply: reputedly serial CMD 4903, a Pilot Model, Engine/chassis number 1C3685F. M.E.E. Report No. B.571 dated 31 December 1940 referred to a trial of the truck between 15 August and 28 November 1940, under Ministry of Supply file 257/Veh/956. ...The report stated that a Ford 6-wheeled chassis with driven front and middle axle and trailing rear axle as supplied to the ‘Canadian Military Department’ was received for test.... A copy of the report found itself in the hands of the DND in Ottawa...
This may have been the prototype or pilot F60H !

This from a pal...in British service. Note there were apparently no # 13 cabbed Canadian orders as the DND had "dropped" the F60H by then in favour of the C60X.
