What a waste of a noble memorial to locate it in Toronto...!!!
Should be in the Nations capital right on Sussex Drive....
After all not all the veterans that paid the ultimate price were from Ontario..but from all parts of Canada..and the memorial located in the Nations capital would reflect that...


Province Announces Veterans' Memorial Unveiling Date
Canadian Military Veterans Permanently Honoured On Queen's Park Grounds

QUEEN'S PARK, ON, Aug. 17 /CNW/ - The historic memorial commemorating the
sacrifices of Canada's veterans who served in war and peace will be unveiled
on September 17, 2006, by the province, veterans, and the military, announced
Minister of Government Services Gerry Phillips today.
"It is fitting that we will unveil this significant memorial on the front
lawn of Queen's Park to coincide with the anniversary date of the first
parliament in Ontario," said Phillips. "The September 17 event will be a great
opportunity for Ontario families and friends to join us in honouring our
veterans and remembering the sacrifices they have made, and continue to make,
to protect our peace and freedoms."
Following one of the largest military parades in Toronto's history, the
Veterans' Memorial wall will be unveiled by numerous veterans and dignitaries
including the Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario,
Premier Dalton McGuinty and the Honourable Michael A. Brown, Speaker of the
Legislative Assembly.
"This memorial wall will be a lasting tribute to the sacrifice, courage
and dedication of our veterans," said Major-General Richard Rohmer, Co-Chair
of the Veterans' Memorial Advisory Committee, which is responsible for the
overall planning of the project. "We are pleased that the military, our
veterans, the province, and the Crown will jointly dedicate this new monument
to those who have given so much."
The Veterans' Memorial, which is located on the northwest section of the
lawn of Queen's Park, consists of a 30-metre (100-foot) long granite wall
etched with scenes from Canada's military history and inscribed with text. The
memorial also features a stone-paved gathering area, a seating area, paths and
a gently sloping lawn.

Wow, and the ceremony is September 17th ... that DAY is personally signifigant to my family as it was my Uncle Eddie's birthday (Sept 17, 1922) and his father's death day (Sept 17, 1945) both from Manitoba, both served with Royal Winnipeg Rifles, different wars ... and I totally agree with you that it SHOULD BE IN OTTAWA to better reflect CANADIAN in it's Capitol City!!!

I'm very sad that the memorial isn't to be in Ottawa, especially when thinking about my Fallen Soldiers relatives, like Uncle Ed. :(

Why Ottawa? Why not a major veteran's memorial in every province. 400,000 troops went over in WW1 and they were recruited from all provinces. 60,000 stayed there. Ottawa has the National Cemetary, National Memorial and the unknown soldier.
And the War Museum. Hmmm....Maybe a trip there is overdue.

That's an even better idea if the powers that be would make that happen ... Memorials at home (Province) way more appropriate, where family and other loved ones can easily visit and pay their respects privately or in ceremonies.
