ID the Vehicle from Inside

1 Attachment(s)
In contrast to Derek's little competition, here is one where you can identify the vehicle from the inside.

No prizes of cans of beer, because the local brew, "Old Grumble Belly", is not available in cans or bottles. :p

Only clue is that it is a demobbed MV

As with previous competitions, only living persons can participate and also non-smokers.

Hi Richard

How about a South African Ford/MH 4x4 Reconnaissance Car Mk iv based on the CMP F60L running gear

Long shot and I can't square what appears to be L H drive

Pete

Hello Pete,

You are far off, I'm afraid :) Have another think.

Richard

Ah HA

it's that amphib GPA that our Antipodean chums have down under. Was it Ben Carlin who sailed it round the world? I remember it was called 'Half Safe'

You are the winner, Pete. That is the vehicle, the clue was the jeep seat.
Sorry, I drank the beer while waiting

Larry,

You were nearly there and spotted the clues. As Pete guessed, it is "Half Safe", a much modified Ford GPA which Ben Carlin took around the world in the 1950's. The photo was taken when I had the opportunity of a quick ride on it, at Corowa in 1999.

I will have to find a more obscure one.

Does the occasional cigar preclude my participation? I do, however, qualify on the other count.

Great idea for a contest though!

 :salute: :drunk: CHIMO!

Hi Richard,

To tell you the truth, I cannot remember posting that thread, ......well, it was 5 years ago :confused

Ah Richard, you'd probably had a 44 gallon drum of that warm flat ale from that lovely pub at Appledorn near your workshop...

Richard

The real clue is the "GPA" title on the bottom identifying the jpeg. I am suprised that no one has yet mentioned it.

Hi Mate, how are you?

Actually, that pub has closed now, but the other one is still open

Look forward to a chat / email sometime.

regards, Richard

Hi Lynn,

It took you 5 years to spot the deliberate mistake then :D

I had the dubious pleasure of driving Half-Safe at Corowa in 1999 thanks to Bob Dimer who trucked it over from Western Australia. I say dubious because. as you sit sofar back from the bow with all that extra cabin built forward, it was a handful to drive. No we didn't take her for a swim.
Not too many people can say that they have driven the only vehicle ever to circumnavigate the earth on both land and sea under its own power. Thanks for the experience, Bob. (RIP)
I'll find some photos one day and post them up.
Rick

I have Ben Carlins book, and the interior was standard GPA.
This shot of yours must have been after "Half safes" 1952-54 rebuild.

Lynn,

I took it in 1999 at Corowa.

Richard Coutts-Smith 05-12-10 23:36

One of my prized possesions is a copy of the first Half Safe book, signed by both Ben and
Elinore while at Melbourne. So I was quite chuffed to find the footage of them from that time.
Rich.
