Fairground vehicles
 

Further to the excellent threads started by Les Freathy, here's a suggestion for a new subject: ex-military WW2 vehicles used as fairground transport. It seems especially in the UK a large number of them were used for many years after the war - military vehicle preservation avant la lettre?

To start off, a FWD SU-COE in the late 1950s. Pic (source) is captioned "G. Cornfield, F. Richardson and R. Newbold in front of J.P. Collins' FWD Sucoe tractor MRE997."

Another of Collins heavies the Mack NM5 with waltzer load and a Diamond T 969 ex wrecker, note the body has been reversed to allow better acces to the generater set

I was sent the pics on this page by a gent whose father, a fairground operator, ran at least one ex-RAF Dodge bus: ex-RAF Dodge (scroll down the page a bit). It was cut up in the 60s (sob).

The top picture of the Diamond T road train is taken in Northern Territory, Australia and was operated by the infamous Kurt Johhansen. The truck was a tank transporter tractor that was stretched for longer wheelbase and re-engined with GM 6-71 diesel. Kurt also designed and made the trailers, shown, which are self tracking. The bogies being made from Carrier trailers. Everything was salvaged from war surplus equipment. The oil drums were salvaged from wartime airfields and returned south for reuse. One of these trucks has been restored to working order at the Road Transport museum in Alice Springs, NT, as well as some of these trailers.

Ander ton and Rowlands Scammell Pioneer " Lord Nelson" in 1953

I had forgotten all about this thread untill looking through one of my showman albums for some info, thougt i would add a few more for interest

1, I well remember this Mack in the 1950s, it was one of a pair owned by Forrest amusements based in kent. John Forrest told mo once that they were slow but good for towing three large trailers fuel consumption was heavy but what the heck at 3/6d in old money per gallon that would be just over 15p currently. John even had time to take a 8mm home movie whilst still in the cab on the move

This Noyce ex military FWD graced the fairgrounds during the 1950/60s and then went into preservation and could be seen at some of the many rallies in the UK. I was informed that when it was handed back to the owners looking good it had no engine, so where is it now

This Malcolm Slater photo shows one of a number of Leyland Hippo MK2 6x4 trucks given extra life by showmen, this one belonged to Proctors of Castleford

A couple of showmans Scammell Pioneers to add, ex B Coles, Southampton (was a wrecker) and ex R Edwards, Swindon (was TRMU 20 tank transporter)
Both being preserved.

Here is a Bedford QL in the fairground with a nice box body, not to many of these were used by showman i would have thought the four wheel drive to be useful on wet ground

Far out (to use a sixties exclamation) these trucks! Those who are familiar with our publications, know that there are many fairground trucks in Frituur Zorro; Beeps, Fords equipped with cranes,Internationals as generator trucks and much more. And even a Scammell Showtrack. To inspire you: this GMC AFKWX on a fairground in Nijmegen (NL)
