Tried to edit the link but it didn't work. Will try to add a new one:

That worked!

Geoff,

Thanks for editing the link. I had some trouble getting it to work.

Lorenzo Tonioli, a fellow scale modeler, found the link and posted it onto the missing-lynx modeling forum. I thought it was well worth displaying it here.

I guess this is the "type 2" CMP prototype, patterned on the Morris Commercial CDSW design???

It is the Ford-Scammell prototype 6x4 artillery tractor. It was trialled at Camp Petawawa in 1938 against a General Motors version and a 6x6 Marmon-Herrington Ford (submitted by Canadian Traction).

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the 1938 Ford-Scammell 6 x4 artillery tractor!! DND # 38-1-53 or -54. I concluded it was the Ford rather than the Chevrolet-Scammell because of its front end design with those louvres and the 'V-8' badge.

That photo was worth a few more $$$ to me!

David, Try to contact the buyer! You never know!
It worked for me while acquiring some old Postcards of a Normandy village, some time ago.

Actually I am pleased to have made this unexpected discovery, in my infinite ignorance on C.M.P. trucks I felt there was something peculiar in this picture.
I can only recommend to explore the rest of the truck pictures for sale from this seller, I have no contacts with him.

Wow

That photo is superb and unique! Can we guess when it was taken by the uniforms? Post-1940?

One more time, Thank you Lorenzo!

Photo!!

The friendly French buyer of the photo Jean-François ANTOINA [antoinajf@tele2.fr] very kindly sent me a 3.6MB scanned version of the photo! Quelle un gentilhomme!

The front number plate seems to have a reversed letters 'GC'. Does that mean anything to anyone? Seems as though it has been turned volte-face. There are of course two truck in the background..one has 'PASS' in white on the left of the tailgate.

A small bit of history to finish: apart from the two Ford-Scammell and Chevrolet-Scammell 6 x 4s there was also one-off Dennis-Scammell and Bedford-Scammell FATs that were trialled by the War Department in 1937-8. I believe that I may have found a photo of one of these in the Bovington collection and am therefore requesting a copy.

Great! In dutch we have a saying: "Niet geschoten is altijd mis". There is probably an English couterpart for this saying, but.....than again you could also translate it like "If you don't shoot, you will always miss".

I am looking forward to the Bovigton-picture!

Soldiers

What is interesting is that the three soldiers lounging on the truck (RSM yells "You there, you bloody slackers! Stop leaning on my truck!!") are representatives of the Army of the Nited States of Merica (USA Army) according to their uniforms.

Hmm and after enlarging the photo and having another look the vehicle appears to be Left Hand Drive. I am sure that is the top of the steering wheel I can see above the LH cowl area.

cheers

Cliff,

At first I thought the picture was turned the wrong way round (that would also explain the "GC" on the grill), but after taking a look on Colin Stevens' website, I realised that more or maybe even all of the early CMP prototypes were left hand Drive.:confused

I was thinking more of:

Quote:

Seek and ye shall find oh ye of little faith
which might be too biblical, but the same principle...go and ask as it does not hurt and it might not be painful after all!

The truck is definitely lhd ... when would the US uniforms date to please? I am guessing 1942 +?

The 1937, 1938 and 1939-40 pre-CMP designs were all lhd. The first rhd was the prototype 15-cwt 4-wheel drive that Dr Gregg featured OR the prototype C-GT.
