Sherman Tank Rides in Wetaskewin, Ab 16 October
 

The Historical Vehicle Troop from the LdSH(RC), will be having a Sherman tank ride available at the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskewin. The rides are selling for $2 a head and we do a 50/50 split with the museum. Our end of the proceeds help us maintain and purchase parts for our running fleet of vehicles. There is also a ferret engine and a ferret on display. This all is happening at the "What's under the hood" event at the Reynolds museum on October 16.

Great stuff, but I wonder how there will be any proceeds left when charging only $2 a head? Is the Army paying for the diesel and supplying new tracks? Are you charging $2 a head per minute? :D

Reynolds Museum
 

I recomend highly that anybody passing thru Alberta visit the Reynolds Alberta Museum and related aviation museum, plan ahead and try to tour the storage facility. there is still Stan Reynolds old personal museum as well. I haven't been there in 6 years and i know he was going to do something with it then, any update on that?

The Wetaskewin museum is a large complex. Stan Reynolds has a huge barn that is the storage area for up and comming projects. Here is the layout for the museum.

It says ride "in" the restored Sherman M4A2E8 Tank.

I believe that makes it a Firefly.

Why would "that" make it a Firefly? The M4A2E8 was fitted with a US 76mm gun as standard. This example is most likely one of the 300 or so acquired by Canada after WW2 for training - see Sherman Encyclopedia > Canada.

Hanno, as far as I know, Beowulf and Catherine are from the shermans that the US didn't want. These are with the twin Detroits in them. At the time, the US only wanted shermans with gasoline engines.

I have let quite a few people about the Sherman and the chance to see one on the move. We don't get many chances to see tanks anymore in Calgary thanks to the Feds.

Tank Ride Insurance ?
 

Paul, could you please forward museum contact information to me ? I'd really like to "talk" with someone there who is knowledgeable about their insurance coverage.

Here in Ontario we seem to be running scared about insurance for everything at MV shows. Maybe there is a company out west that will write us a policy that will once again allow us to take the public on "tank rides". I sure got a kick out of riding around in the turret as a 10 year old, if fact I'm sure that is what got me "hooked" on the hobby in the first place.

Are the "Historical Vehicle Troop" of the Lord Strathcona's part of the unit or an Army historical section, or are they a private re-enacting group or museum? If it is an Army body, you will find they will be operating with their own self-insuring procedures rather than having any commercially issued Public Liability cover. When our Army here gets the inclination to put on any public display, it can get away with things that would have any actuary cringing and a liability lawyer slavering with glee.

HVT (Historical Vehicle Troop) is a group of VOLUNTEERS from the LdSH(RC) (army guys) that have an interest in historical vehicles and showing them to the public. The vehicles are privately owned, registered and insured for the road.

Paul, once again thank you for posting about the Sherman ride. We all had a great time riding in the Sherman. I have never seen so many people with ear to ear grins in my life.

It was a memorable experience for us all!

There was an EXCELLENT turn out for the event, all of the pics that I took, I have forwarded them to the Reynolds museum, so I hope they will post them for you to see. There were aprox 100 people for the ride throughout the day. The museum found out at the gate that most people came only for the ride. Normally, they said that the "under the hood" event, there were only "motorheads" that attended, but because of the Sherman ride, there were more families.:D

This event was so popular that they are going to try and book the Sherman for next years August long week end, and I hope everyone had a good time riding a piece of history.
