What is a carrier bail out bag?

that is the hard webb bag that hangs on the inside of the carrier, welsh pattern carriers had 6-8 of them. look on your load out diagram, or the parts book for location. they have a metal clip on the back and a long webb strap rivited to them. they are hard as hell to find today.

The example of the Bail Out Bag that we have in our museum is made of leather with a metal clip on the back and an adjustable shoulder strap. The chap who gave it to us, Dick Kenzie, bought it from an Ordinance Corps type while on leave in Italy. Even though Dick spent four years as a Carrier Driver he never once saw one of these bags delivered with a new Carrier.

the one i have loaned to me was a original, it is made from canvas formed with a stiffining agent. it also has a long strap.

I beleive you will find that the leather examples are British, and the other type are Cadandian manufacture.

The leather ones normally have prominent British parts numbers and date of manufacture stamped on. Quite if the Canadians ever adopted the British pattern I will leave to other to answer.

I would have thought that the Canadian examples would still have the clips on the back to hang on to the stowage strip in the back of MK11*.

They were in theroy supplied as part of the CES when the vehicles left the factory.

normaly you would find 6 on a welsh pattern carrier each with a AFV first aid kit and ammo.

Are these the bags you are talking about?
If so there are 4 types. 2 leather (1 with single leather strap and buckle, and 1 with two quick release straps), 1 fibre board (single webbing fastener, Canadian), and a Leathercloth one (single strap with buckle).

They all have the same bracket arrangement on the back which allows then to fix to the metal rails that run along the inside of the MkII and MkIII carriers.

Hope this helps and if I can find more photos of the other types I'll post them here.

Incidently I have a load of these bags for sale later this year, mainly leather two strap ones. (Stew I still have yours in a box!)

These fit nicely in the T-16 as well. In fact, Nigel found a couple for me at Beltring a couple years ago. I have 3 of them in my vehicle.

I think that I will force my way back to the UK next summer - once the hubbub of the 60th anniversary has quieted down.

The wife gets another weeks vacation next year, so we should get back over there and make a few weeks of it. I spent my last week at Beltring, but I hear that there is even more to see that MVs in the UK. ( Is this so?)

I will be in touch to see what sights I should take in, in addition to the MV stuff. Surely there must be a castle or something near Bovington, and I could drop Mary off at a mall while I went to the Imperial War Museum - it sounds like fun already!

You silly man. Julia spent almost all her time in the castles up there!

Here's your itinerary:

Go for the bank holiday at the end of May. Forget Beltring, go to Richard's show at Horndean. Then drop off Mary at the shops in Portsmouth or Southampton, and go to Bovington. THEN, drive to Scotland.
