Many thanks, a wealth of detail. Black and white too, so it probably dates to about the same era as when I started my restoration of something similar...

This is what happened to it

In 1944 several of these were converted in Melbourne to electric cranes, using the chassis originally intended for the Rhino heavy armoured car project, which was abandoned because of overweight problems. These before and after pics were taken by Metropolitan Gas in Fitzroy who were the contractors. They also built carriers including the 3" mortar and 2 pound tank attack carrier. Peters Brothers in Sydney also converted some of these chassis to cranes. In the end, we used the Chevrolet Staghound. |
