Light bulb 12 volt
1 Attachment(s)
Hi Team, can you still buy this type of bulb for the CMP headlights, in 12 volt.
Have 6 volt ones but need 12 volt, with the special locater shroud , Thanks Andrew. |
Does this look like it might do?
https://www.speedwaymotors.com/High-...tyle,7159.html https://bobdrake.com/products/1935-3...W4x3WX22zTzZIB I haven't dealt with either company so can't comment on service, either good or bad. The listing from Drake uses a part number 48-13007-12V, was 48-13007 the original number? If it helps, my search string was: prefocus headlight bulb 12V Ford |
Forget car part numbers. You need to use the bulb type/socket part numbers
The kind you are looking for a P15D-30 bulb. LEDLight sells them. Ive got 6v ones in my CMP and Jeep and will be putting the 12v ones in the Otter. https://www.ledlight.com/led-headlam...ed-60-smd.aspx My only word of advice. Once you get them, melt in a bit of solder in the joint of the outer ring and the socket base. Otherwise the three undersized dimples will loosen and the bulb will rotate in the outer ring. This results in the contacts not matching up. |
spot the difference
I noted a number of years ago the difference between 6 and 12 volt bulbs and sockets was that the contacts on the bulb ore 90 degrees off between them.

Bulb Replacement
Looked up those sites and looked OK. I bought a standard 12/21W bulb with bayonet fittings and ground those off and found I could sweat off the ring on the old 6 volt and solder back onto the new 12 volt, fits perfect , so maybe this is an option if you have the time to tinker, cheers Andrew.

In the US, you can get them from Normanlamps.com. They’re in both 12v and 6v.

Andrew, incase you dont know, the bulbs before these were what they called prefocus. The installer adjusted the bulb in the holder to the best set up and then tightened the clamp band.
These came along after the Prefocus and it matters where the mount flange is soldered on, in relation to the filaments. |
Thanks Lynn, that is a good bit of information on a technical issue, I might be lazy and buy some already made.
|
Surely this style is the pre focus as it comes fitted with the flange to set the height in the reflector to ensure correct focus. The type before has to be adjusted in the reflector clamp to ensure correct focus.
|
Surely you are correct, Adrian. :note: The pre focus has an "ed" on it as in "pre-focused" the bulbs with flanges are "pre focused". The older style that you adjusted were just..... terrible lights. Now all you need Andrew is to work out which ones dip left and which ones dip right. Hopefully the American ones are not sold here.

Very true. I was forgetting that part of the puzzle when I made my suggestions although it is my feeling that all lights of the era were poor compared to the better modern lights. (Though there are plenty of overpriced and underperforming modern lights too.) |
Dip to the left or Right
Is it not true that a bulb is a bulb, and the dip left and dip right is corrected by the actual glass lens? . I always noted that CMP lights that turned up here in New Zealand, had for "Export" engraved in them , because we drive on the correct side of the road....and not the wrong side like the American's do.
