Hi all
I have been struggling to identify what the red notes in the AWM register 126 for my Chev Blitz.
it is obviously a disposal record but I can't work out what the notation means.
It says "GMH SAN 4372" and the ARN is crossed through in red.

I would love to be able to track the life of the truck and this is the only link I have.
any ideas? cheers

Hi Bruce that will be a great project.

SAN = Sales Advice Note or Number, a admin document or receipt that was issued by the Commonwealth Disposals Commission (CDC) to the purchaser of the truck, in your case GM-H Holden. Govt. departments had first option on buying the vehicles, but most of the vehicles were purchased by the original manufacturer and sold through their dealerships.

Many Willys jeeps were sold to Stokoe Motors in Melbourne , Stokoe were the official Willys dealers in Victoria.

Vehicles left in the more remote areas i.e. PNG or Northern Australia were often purchased by private companies or individuals . AH Jolly ( think based in Darwin ) and Carpenter & Co. ( PNG trading business ) being two of the bigger buyers.

Some small number of vehicles were bought by used vehicle dealers , Doug Wheelhouse in Oakleigh Melbourne and Ricky Bros. at Ballarat are two I found.

The Dodge vehicles usually went to the CDD Australia dealers: Canada Cycle in Victoria and Harden & Johnston in NSW.

The Morris C8 A/T 4x4s went to Lanes Motors in Melbourne , the Nuffield agency.

During the war, in order to negate the greedy profit merchants, there was a Federal Govt. 'pegged price' scheme that supposedly limited the price of used vehicles ( and other goods ) but I think in the real world the supply and demand market dictated the actual price.
