Description

This Morris Commercial C8 Quad is a very special vehicle, an artillery tractor of the British Army of the Second World War, transformed around 1949 into an agricultural vehicle by the Italian company Giovanzana of Mantua. Today it is very rare to find one of these tractors transformed on the basis of the military surplus recovered in the famous ARAR fields, especially in these excellent conditions of conservation and in perfect working order. The transformation was a painstaking intervention to make the Morris C8 an efficient and economical farm vehicle to drive. First, the wheelbase was reduced by about a meter, but not by cutting and welding the frame side members, but by repositioning the rear axle leaf spring mounts to the frame. With a shorter wheelbase, the agility qualities of the Morris Quad have been improved, in fact the vehicle has four-wheel drive, reduced speeds, differential locks; for agricultural use, the equipment was simplified with a simple roof and windshield for the driving compartment, a wooden floor at the rear, while the tow hook and the PTO system were added. But most importantly, the power system of the 3.5-liter four-cylinder engine was changed: it could in fact run on both gasoline and kerosene (in Italy this cheap fuel, widely used in the agriculture, was simply called "petroleum", like that (used for lamps) thanks to an ingenious system of vaporization applied to the exhaust manifold. The cold start was done with gasoline, then if you want you can switch to cheaper kerosene once the engine has reached normal temperature. As you can see there are actually two tanks. The starting system uses both the classic crank and an electric motor (the latter not visible in the photo as it has been disassembled for overhaul but now already reassembled on the vehicle and in perfect working order). High voltage magnetic ignition. Eventual conversion to the original military configuration is not difficult. There are no registration documents, only the old UMA license plate from Verona to obtain agricultural fuel and a bill of sale which will be completed at the time of transfer. The vehicle is located in Giaveno, 30 km from Turin.

dual fuel

... The cold start was done with gasoline, then if you want you can switch to cheaper kerosene once the engine has reached normal temperature. ...

I remember seeing a documentary about cars in Cuba which started with gasoline, because of its volatility, but ran on cheaper kerosene. The driver had to use his expensive gasoline sparingly.

In the words of my old colleague Kevin who worked at the Canadian Embassy in Havana, what was the most powerful aphrodisiac on the island? Gasoline, it meant the guy had money or connections.
