Pictured is the spare barrel carrier rack, kit bins, pointed ammo box dividers to be mounted in storage lockers, and LAAT cushons for back benches. -30C in the back shop! Off to my warm tub. Cheers Rob

Rob, I'm in awe - sure beats my snail's pace of progress. Still taking bits *off* the HUP.

LAAT winch spool dia. height

Are all winch spools created equally? If my LAAT box is going to clear the winch spool on my F-60S I will have to use 6" wooden timbers under the box to clear the chassis rail and winch spool, resulting in an elevated box. Is this the norm? Great progress, 60 straight days of fun and hard work! Lovin it. See pics. Cheers Rob

Source for tarp tie downs?

1 Attachment(s)
Yes, I could manufacture the dozen of these I need for the LAAT tarp and box, but does anyone know of a source for these?

Looks fantastic, Rob! Congrats to you and your brother.

(keep the Ford, though!)

It is looking great so far - very much looking forward to seeing the whole Bofors combo when it is done.

Rob - you coulda moved the camera a bit and you could have had a halo of light around Tony's head - would have looked very impressive.

I'm admiring the waviness of the LAAT body panels - it's helping me to obsess a little less about how much I really need to try to get the back body of my HUP smoothed out - I've started to dolly out some of the easier dents, but haven't fully tackled the cellulite effect on the right rear corner.

Rob Fast 06-03-05 02:59

Thanks Hanno and Mark...

for the compliments. Yes , our restorations are not prestine, we are not after the Shelby Mustang, better than factory look. We do the best we can, and have fun while doing it! It's all about the history and the veterens. Cheers Rob

Wrinkles

Rob; Some of us have more wrinkles than others,it is common upon the elderly, both people and vehicles. I consider them badges of honour, both earned by good but hard use. The LAAT looks great, and the colour is right on. Finally got some "DTB" mixed using your recipe from a few months ago, and it is right on the money. The guy at the paint shop couldn't believe what I was going to put it on, and when I said that I thinned it with gas he just about cracked up. I have done a few brackets, etc, and they came out perfect. Waiting for some warmer weather to give my F15A the final spray. Will post a pic when it's done. I also got some of the "OD" mixed as well and gave the DiamondT a bit of a touch up, almost a perfect match. Being the furthest thing from a perfectionist, I heartily agree that the reason is to keep them rolling in memory of the veterans, and not try to make them concourse perfect. One old fart's opinion only.
Cheers, Bill

Sponge hockey pucks...

you just never know when your going need them! Very close to rubber ammo box bumpers, they will do for now. Thanks for all your input Keith. Any info out there on LAAT tools etc..top locker has fittings for 3 shovels on the top , machette right hand wall, guessing on brackets on back wall where picks are located. Also two hooks back of lower ammo locker on the pointed dividers. Cheers Rob

LAAT

Your LAAT is looking great! I'm envious. I have a tentative ID of my CMP as a C30 LAAT, at least, that's my best guess. There is no data plate on my truck, but I do have the cross members that support the winch and the controls? for the winch behind the cab. Unless of course, other types of CMP also had these cross members with no winch.

I have a couple of questions:

What does the L in LAAT stand for? Lorry? Light? Logistic? Anybody know?

Anybody know where I can find the winch?

As always, your help is greatly appreciated! Ya'll be good!

CHIMO!

LAAT crew small arms issue?

I did not come across any evidence of small arms/rifle butt stock holders and clips in the back of the Laat box during restoration. Yes, 2 Long Branch's in the cab, but what else and where? Cheers Rob

Can you identify that box with rope handles situated behind the chair, as depicted in one of your shots of the LAAT during restoration?

Hello Jon...

that box was featured in the "whatizit" section of an early Convoy publication. With no positive identification from that press, I am still guessing. I believe it to be Canadian/ wooden/sliding lid/ reinforced, it fits the spare parts tray in the back of the LAAT, so it will do for now until the right LAAT box shows up. See Convoy for details. Cheers Rob

I'm planning on painting my CMP dtb also. Would you mind emailing me the recipe also? Thanks, Derek.

Rob:

Unfortunately, since I'm no longer a Convoy Magazine subscriber, I can't look up your referenced copy.

However, I just happen to have such a box, and have had for some 30+ years. Always wondered about just where it fit in to military useage.
