CMP SEMI info needed
1 Attachment(s)
Hi Folk. I need ASAP some photos of the trailer connection on the pictured CMP semi.
I especially need pics of the attachment that fits on the truck chassis. So some pics and or measurements/drawings would be appreciated especially with the trailer off. Pics and or drawings of the fitting on the trailer would be nice as well. Thanks in advance Cliff:salute: |
Trailer
Max Hedges has one of these trailers and may be able to help.

tractor units
Cliff, you also need to bear in mind we didn't use the F60T 115" wheelbase - ours were all the 134"
|
Keith I am doing a 1941 Ford semi and the hook up was the same as on Max Hedges semi. I did email Max through this forum a week or two back but am not sure if he got it or not.
I will be doing a CMP semi later next year as well so I will remember that it is a 134in WB for our one. Alex it does help a lot. Thanks for the pictures Photoshop will join them up and enlarge them for me. Thanks for the info guys I really appreciate your willingness to help if you can. Cheers Cliff:salute: |
British versions?
I keep thinking that the post-war rebuilds that I have photos of used the Scammell fifth wheel as used on Bedfords, and which would be readily available. Until I saw the photo of the C15A from Takoradi I had never seen a Chevrolet semi-tractor in British service. However I have to correct this! It seems that they also used a fixed-pin design as well similar to the Australian system, and also the F60T.
I forgot to ask whether the Aussie Ford and Chev fifth-wheel conversions used the same design, and who designed/produced it? |

If you look closely at the photos that Keith put up of Max's CMP you will see two upstands and not the one of the fifth wheel. Most semis now have been converted away from this system and it is why I cannot find much info on it. Hopefully Max will see this plea and enlighten us all .:) other then that I am just :bang: cheers Cliff |
CMP semi trailer connection

Hi Cliff, Here is a pic of a trailer connection I took at John Belfield's back yard earlier this year.
The channel section bolts to the truck chassis and the round piece above is the arrangement that allows the trailer to swivel. I hope this helps. Cheers Rod |

This is a pic of John Belfield's complete trailer. The truck connection frame can be seen above the tyre pile on the right. Note that these trailers also had 18" tyres and not 20". That's why all the old pics of them always show two spares, one for the truck and one for the trailer.
Also just visible in this shot above the directly above the diff lying on the ground is the trailer brake vacuum tank. The vacuum lines can be seen in the previous pic running along under the trailer tray. Cheers Rod |
thanks Rod much appreciated.

And another from 31 years ago.

And a detail: http://www.oldcmp.net/images/Trailers/rtnt_detail.jpg This one was at Ringwood Timber and Trading Company. The vehicle in the background is a Bedford QL. |
Another AWM pic
Have a look at neg 112884 which is a closer shot of the front of the trailer.

yes I have that picture as well Keith. Once again though the detail is not quite enough to figure out what it looks like and how it works.
Thanks for all the imput guys I will beat this little bit of Aussie truck yet ;) cheers Cliff:salute: |
