oil level ford cmp transfer case
Hello
I have fill my transfert case of my FAT 1941 with oil level on the filler plug with about 2.8liter , but wile driving oil is liking on the top of the case on the air vent, so I ask myself if there was not to much oil ? On my ford manual they say FAT case need 2 imperial pints, but Niels send me a copy of is ford manual that said 5 pints, Are there different transfert types or is one manual wrong, I would'n like to brake my transfert for an oil level!! Regards Sylvain |
Hello Sylvain,
See http://www.mapleleafup.net/vehicles/.../fordspec.html under "Lubrication Capacity": Transfer Case - 2 pts. for all models. A US Pint (Liquid) equals to 0.473 liter. so 2 pints is 0.946 liter. Your 2.8 liter equals to the 5 pints quoted by Niels. If it spills out at the vents it clearly is too much. Hanno |
Thank you hanno,
That also what I was thinking, but why is Niels ford manual talking about 5pints are they bigger cases mabe on later one? If I use 2 pints I will be far deeper than the filler plug, so impossible to check the level, strange for a military truck? Regards Sylvain |

There were also two styles of Transfer Case body, in both single and two-speed cases. The style with a rounded bottom held the 2 pint capacity, while the flat-bottom case held 5 pints.
Oddly, the Ford Master Parts Catalog shows the rounded-bottom case (2 pint) being the EARLIER part number, while the flat bottom case (5 pint) has a LATER part number, opposite to what the operator manuals might indicate. See pics in THIS THREAD. |
Hello hall
Thank you for your helps I have the small gear box , add the two pint plus 1/3 for the PTO ,level is about 2" under the Filler plug . The gear stop leaking, everything is Ok now. Regards Sylvain |

I checked my spares parts book and yep there was the second type, never thought to check it.

At least on the later models, there are two smaller level plugs on the other side of the transfer case. There was a thread on here a while back about the purpose (I seem to remember it was related to the temperature). As such there are two different capacities.
