Cmp/runflat question
 

Has anyone out there fitted a 900x16 Ferret RF tyre to a CMP 16" rim? Is it possible to do as is or is trimming of the rust band in order?

One of the western Command Guys here in Vancouver is using ferret tires on his c13 ,It was a tight fit ,if there is a problem take them to a Forklift tire place and they will persuade them on with
a Press on Machie that is used to press solid tires onto forklift rims
On My C.M.P my commercial tire guy did one the old fashioned way with tire irons and the rest he used the Press.

My "as purchased" Cab 13 '44 Chev has 9:00 x 16 Ferret RFs.

For the life of me, I couldn't decipher, from the MB-C1 Maintenance Manual, the proper tyre pressure required, what with front/rear axle weights etc...so I put in 30 psi all around and everything seems to be OK.

Wayne , I have fitted them and I used a sharp boot makers knife and soapy water to take a skim off the bead of the tyre where it contacts the rim .

Clean and paint the rims first
 

I've found that one of the secrets to putting tires on CMP rims and being able to get them off again is to start by really cleaning the rims and painting them. Clean down to bare metal prime and paint, I've always used gloss enamel, with hardener, same color as truck. Let the paint really several days before mounting the tires. The difference this makes in getting the tires off again is worth the effort. You can actually change a tube with tire irons in about 20 minutes.

I have done dozens of these installations. Initially I has pressing them onto the inner rim and using LOTS of air pressure to get them to seat onto the outer rim (in a cage of course), but later I just started cutting the beads about 3/8" to get them on a lot easier. A razor (utility) knife with a brand new blade is reccomended, and you will probably want to put another new blade on for each tire, if not for each bead. Some guys will warn against cutting the tires, but I think this applies more to the old NDCC 9x16 US tires. The ferret tires have a lot of meat to them and I think you would be hard pressed to get one of those carcasses to disintegrate. I used them on my old KL (now owned by Chris Vickery), which is a very heavy truck, and one of the inner tubes blew on me about 20 miles out of Winnipeg after having been towed 300 miles. The truck was operated for the weekend parades with the tire "flat" and it wasn't really that noticeable. I finally had a chance to change it before the trip home.

Great tires if you can still find them.

Well, I *have* those Ferret run-flats on my HUP - as Rob Love can confirm, but I didn't put them on, so I can offer no useful installation tips, but I think that advice "get someone else to do it" is going to apply in my case when it's time for them to come off to be replaced by the correct pneumatics. So if anyone is looking for 4 Dunlop Trak-Grips, I got four of 'em, that is, if someone has a set of 5 pneumatics to swap. (9.25 x 16s would be real nice). No rush.

I could be interested in the tyres, but I have nothing to trade!! :(

No rush Jonnie - I need those things on the HUP for a while yet.

Thanks for links Hanno - I certainly have no plans to screw around with getting those things on and off the rims - even the original manual makes it clear what a production that is - with all the attendant dangers.

When the time comes, I plan to replace the run-flats with pneumatics, but with what I'm not yet sure - would be nice to find a set of Goodyear 9.25x16 (Dream on).
