Advertised as a 1942, I always thought the Mk2’s came out late 43 ?

Richard, in Universals it's messy. In the list of contracts in the back of Nigel Watson's first Vol., he has put question marks as the details were not available to him (both side of the Atlantic)
Obviously some of the manufacturers in the U.K were rolling out MII's, while other U.K. factories were still rolling out MkI's. As an example, my Dagenham built AOP MkIIIw (welded hull - Not identified as such, in Nigel's book ) rolled out circa October 1941. T84991 was the 370th of a contract that was for 3443 units. The first of them rolled out 17 Sept 1941. The contract finished 16th March 1942. I know that most of you guys are thinking Universal Carriers, and Canadian at that, but each type of carrier, M.G,. Bren, Scout, A.O.P., 3" Mortar, Loyd, and U.C. had its various Mks. 1,2,3, etc. As the introduction of a new Mk. is relative to a major design or stowage arrangement, there is no co-relation between the types. About the time my Armoured O.P. Mk IIIw rolled out of the Dagenham Ford plant (October 1941) Canada had built about 2000 U.Cs., (Oct.29) and Britain had built about 23,000 U.Cs. Anyhow, the opportunity to buy a turn key Carrier can't come along very often. |
