Sand color painting

Hello
My ford FAT cab 12 looks to have been painted in sand colors when it was "new", some original colors can be seen under the truck.
Can someone give me the reference of this painting in RAL if possible?
Is that sand color comon on this truck?

Cheers
Sylvain

Sylvain,

That would be Light Stone #61. When the brunt of the fighting was in North Africa and many of the Commonwealth armies were dependent on Canadian vehicle manufacture, many if not most vehicles were painted Light Stone. Not all reached North Africa, those which were diverted to other theatres were repainted. There is no RAL equivalent. You could go to the expert on paint colours Mike Starmer - he has recipes to mix the right colour - see http://www.mafva.org/british-vehicle...flage-1939-45/ - or buy his books.

I had a look at my unrestored quad yesterday.

this is the seat bracket from in the rear.

Please note that finding parts in Light Stone colour does not mean the whole truck had that colour. It could well be that single parts or even assemblies had that colour, only to be sprayed in the final top coat colour as required per the contract which of course could be changed as war progressed and materiel had to be shipped to other theatres of war.

See the quote below from an earlier thread:

Lauren,

It could well have been painted "Light Stone" as it was officially known, or at least parts of the vehicle (as Phil noted). On this forum there are some pictures of trucks being assembled, e.g. green chassis with sand coloured cabs, only to be sprayed a uniform colour after final assembly and testing (see below).

My F15A also has a Light Stone base colour on at least the cab steps and tailgate where the later top layers have been chipped or worn off.

As your F22 was assembled in November 1945, chances are high the Ford factory used up any parts and paint they had in stock, rather than complying to contract specs and buying new paint. Seeing the late build date, I suspect your F22 was shipped to the UK and then re-assembled by a company like Pearson's. Surplus stocks of unused military vehicles were sold off to civilian users, often in (grey?) primer, ready for the new owner to apply their livery of choice.

Please keep recording the paint colours you come across, it's a vital part of "CMP archeology" :)

Hanno
