Sender unit question

Hi

I am in process of converting our C60L Wrecker from 6v to 12v and the only thing still to do is the 2 fuel tank sender units. Can anyone tell me if I need to swap these as well as the gauge to 12 volt ones or would originals suffice with req to fit a resistor in line or similar.

Usually........

Both tank sender units will need replacing with a 12 volts sender..... about $50 US dollars........ and they will bolt right in to your tank..... it they will look slightly different

In your dash just before the fuel gauge you will need a voltage reducer from 12 to 6 volts....... bolts right on the stud of the gauge....worth about $15 US.

Have you. Insidered cleaning up the inside of the fuel tank and possibly installing a tank liner/sealer while at this stage?..... now is the time to do it.

Wiring...... the existing wiring if not all dried up should be adequate........ I used a new wiring harness made of 16 gauge wires.

Good luck.
Cheers

Bob, :note: If the 6 volt tank units are good, will they not still work with the original gauge if the correct rated resistor is fitted before the gauge.(power feed side)

My understanding is that the original senders should work. Ohms are Ohms. The "special" part about Chevs is that they used a different resistance range than either their contemporary Ford or more modern Chevs. I think the resistance range used on Chevs with the commercial gauge cluster and the round instruments were the same 0-30 Ohms. The important part is that the gauge and sender need to match (hence the voltage reducer at the gauge to make it match the original sender).
