Any Cultural Studies Academics here?

Hello All,

Us military restorers are a pretty diverse bunch. I am just wondering if that extends to there being any other Cultural Studies researchers on the forum? You never know.... :kangaroo

Kind Regards
Lionel

jack neville 27-08-16 15:20

What do you want to know?

Lionelgee 28-08-16 09:29

G'day Jack,

Not so much wanting to know - more like being able to converse with another bird of the same feather!

Well at least another Cultural Studies person. A possible improvement on that would be to converse with a Cultural Studies person who appreciates the influence of Social Constructionism. Even better would be a Social Constructionism Realist person who works within the field of Cultural Linguistics. However, that is my being exceptionally picky! Working in isolation is starting to send me further around the twist

Kind Regards
Lionel

Private_collector 28-08-16 10:46

I don't even know what the hell all that means! :giveup

Lynn Eades 28-08-16 11:23

The preceding is proof positive one shouldn't go anywhere near a dictionary when one has had a few drinks.

Or proof that an expert is one who knows more and more about less and less! :)

Only joking Lionel :D

With an apology.....

Gentlemen: I was up very early this morning, facing numerous catastrophes at work, but just happened to log in before I went out the door.
After reading this entree, I have to say....this is one of the funniest I ever had the the chance to read on this forum, from both sides.
You made my day!
Thanks Lionel and the commentators......cause I still haven't figured this out myself!
With apologies to Lionel.....Robert

G'day and Tsk Tsk,

Some part of my former life can only agree with you. I am a broken down worn out Parks and Gardens Landscaper. One who never intended going to university as I was a "Tradie" - Tradesperson. I can honestly say that ignorance can be sheer bliss. I had to retrain and due to an eye complaint I was instructed that I could no longer work in dust and dirt - none of that with motor vehicle restoration is there - teehee. Well not 8 hours a day five days a week anyway.

So I took a course at university. Then perhaps another one or two or ... As a consequence I now frequently have part of my mind sitting there pointing its finger, laughing at me going, "you are such an academic (the utterance of an inaudible - comment or two) .... Lionel." The tone of voice is not complementary either. Then it says, "what did you used to say about academics?" ...

I am too polite to write what I used to think about them here either. :sheep:

To make matters worse - I have two elder brothers, who are both tradies and they both point their fingers at me, they laugh and then say, "Lionel you are such a * % ## oh and an Academic!" Maybe it is their voices in my mind ..... noooooo!

So see what happens when you disparage a group of people through ignorance - fate turns around and bites you on your arse! oh and Tradies rool :salute: Who wrote that ? ....

Kind Regards
Lionel

Only too true Cliff - Socrates is attributed as saying, "The more i learn, the less i know" I actually prefer Mark Twain's take “The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.”

I might add and working on my military vehicles :)

Hello Bruce and Company,

If there are any insomniacs here I may be able to cure it by providing an explanation of my field of study - i won't charge too much :)

"Once upon a time their was a man called Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky who wrote about Thought & Language - he also wrote a book called Fundamentals of Defectology that is widely unknown in the Disability Sector. .... are you asleep yet? Then came a man called
Alexander Romanovich Luria who described a method of study called Romantic Science ... Are your eyelids getting heavy yet? Then along came Wittgenstein and Harré ... then came along the "Vygotsky School" of Social Constructionism - Realists"... Then came along the "Cultural Turn within Cultural Studies

Snore - snore ... Damn I should have got your bank account details first .... when will I Learn :)

Kind Regards
Lionel

"I think I've lost the will to live!"
Tony,
Have a look in the shed. It might be in there :D

Lynn Eades 29-08-16 22:44

Lionel, I think you've found the "other" group.
I suspect that the person (small group?) that you are seeking, will likely contact you by P.M., now.

Now, I apologize for my flippancy. :salute:
I applaud you for having the testicles to ask (......for whatever you asked for?)

Phil Waterman 29-08-16 23:11

Little like talking to my son

Hi Lionel

Your question and the resulting thread reminds me of talking with my son who is a philosophy professor, when we talk about philosophy I reminded him to talk at the introductory class level, for me. When he calls because he can't get his car to run or the lawn mower to start we talk with photos and diagrams. Just different points of reference, but he enjoys driving the CMPs.

My kids friends get a kick out of how my daughter will fix plow truck over the phone with me, cell phone cameras are great. They laugh at her calling her dad, until the truck starts, an she points out that I'm cheaper and quicker than the motor club.

Cheers Phil

Cheers Phil

Lynn Eades 29-08-16 23:22

Phil, I can relate to that. I have a son who is doing his masters in energy management. (he works as a consultant) and another son studying mechatronics. I used to teach them stuff. Now I listen and try to understand.:ergh:

Ah, at first a didn't realize the participatory alignment you were seeking!! The fundamental practicum between Fran Hutzgerger's molyandering exposit of detractionism fluctuated (of course!!) by Dorgum Doghmeechie's wonderful introgonic piece on psykoldrugery (I love his insight as surely you must too...masterful!!) gives one chance hold on the polmandeing construct of complete utter nonsense.

Kay, now I've got you all confused-like, I want nothing of your credit card numbers. All I want is your CMP parts, Chev preferably. Radio parts too. C'mon...give 'em up.

Little Jo 30-08-16 01:43

Confused.

Hang on a minute.. now I am completely confused.!! "Could you please rephrase the question into layman's language as I do not understand the question". Oh well lets go back to the beginning..!! :giveup

jack neville 30-08-16 10:45

I just bought a lathe to play with. I can have all the academic conversations with metal I want. Beer and coffee welcome but my shed is getting a little crowded.

G'day Lynn,

There are at least two fantastic imports from New Zealand - Mainland Vintage Cheese. Also one Horace Romano Harré. "Rom" Harré was born in Apiti, in northern Manawatu, near Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1927. :salute: Oh BTW Harré is one of the founders of the Social Constructionism - Realist movement that I prescribe to academic discipline wise . No I will inflict no more torture on any one from this point on. If anyone is interested here is Rom's Wiki-bio ....

Lynn Eades 01-09-16 04:09

Well Lionel, just reading about him makes my head hurt. This is a track I never expected to look along on MLU. Indeed the road less traveled. I think I will turn back while I remember the way.

Little Jo 01-09-16 04:30

The end

Meanwhile back on the farm!!! I will have find something to do to clear the head...

Lionelgee 01-09-16 04:52

Hello All,

Well have a look at this description ...

The Sergeants' Mess ... This forum for general discussion on topics past, present and future which don't seem to fit anywhere else.

... have I misunderstood its intent? :)

Kind Regards
Lionel
