1962. Slightly before I started driving (legally.)

Spotted in the opening credits that Roger Climpson did the commentary.

Unannounced though is the appearance of Professor Harry Messel! Look him up to see the Canadian connection and his role in post-war Australia. (I'll admit I didn't get his name right - I had to search too; I was thinking Prof. Harry Messner, but Messel it is.)

Professor Harry Messel ,yes he was on tellie , I recall his TV lectures on Physics but didn't understand one word of it. He would scribble math and waffle on with his Canadian accent .

Hand signals Hmmm . I do remember the give way to the right rule and the utter confusion when a car appeared on your right while you were driving along a major road. You had to stop and give way and hold up the traffic behind, it was a silly rule .

The girl fiddling with the Geranium transistor has a AWV badge on her blouse. Amalagamated Wireless Valve .

My first car was a Triumph Herald coupe as in the film. They used nylon bushes in the front end and suffered breakdowns with a weak diff . It was a good handling car , stuck to the road well . Mine had Lotus wheels on it.

Gee, that symbol is hard to read. AWV? or AWA - Amalgamated Wireless Australia? Had been in wireless in Australia since the old days of HF links to/ from England.

And the old 'dumb' cop at the tee-intersection. Until recent years there was still one at the corner of Auburn rd & Burke rd (sort of Camberwell area in Melbourne.) Might still be there.

The first 'car' I bought was a mini-moke, could poke arm out through the side flap for signalling - but mine did have indicators, so didn't need to. (No wireless, no heater either)

We don't have accents, you do.

Cheers,

hi Allan

AWV was a part of the AWA brand. AWV was owned by AWA and manufactured vacuum tubes and later transistors .

I have a few early 60's portable radios with AWV transistors in situ. The old Germanium transistors do not age well, they often have to be replaced . The golden era of short wave links is long gone :giveup Mike

I think you will find the give way to your right rule still applies if there are no stop, give way, halt lines or other indicators at a intersection.
They never got rid of the rule.............it just faded away under the sea of traffic lights and give way signs.
In Sydney in 1962 their was only Two roundabouts and now countless roundabouts with a rule of give way to your right.
Riding my old B40 BSA motor bike which has no indicators, I use hand signals as still required by law on a vehicle not fitted with them, but get some weird looks by people these days who don't know what I am doing.

Film

Interesting to see the Austin Healey Sprite and MGA, clearly the youth in this film had substantial salaries or wealthy, generous parents with not a lot of sense.

I think the film transfer has happened in the nick of time too - the colour has almost all faded away and the fabric of the film is in poor condition.

Lynn Eades 13-07-16 07:51

Which Lotus Mike? I had Lotus Wheels on my MkI G.T. Escort, but they were a different PCD to the Triumphs. Those were the days! (of nearly no mileage between tune ups!) :D

And in this one towards the end (around 17:45) there are some shots of a GMC workshop including the interior.
