UK Sites to Visit ?

Will shortly be spending two weeks in the UK and wondered what HMV sites should be included in my travel plans ?

Will be driving London-Dover-Portsmouth-Plymouth-Land'sEnd-Bristol-Reading-London and would appreciate suggestions for MV visits along the way. Mostly interested in WW2 vehicles but naval, artillery and aircraft also ...

Have already planned R&R Services, Dover Castle(and related defences), Hastings, Bovington Tank Museum, Cobbaton Combat Collection and Stonehenge.

Thanks for your advice, in advance. Robert in Toronto

Robert,
For artillery and weapons, the Firepower Museum in Woolwich, SE London is good. It is the Royal Artillery Museum in fact, take a look at their website.

Also, a little out of your defined route is Duxford Museum, for aircraft and vehicles it is excellent.

Well, whilst in London you might find The Imperial War Museum of interest, together with HMS Belfast and The Science Museum too.

Around Portsmouth then, the Dockyard is expensive but worthwhile, you CANNOT come down here and not see HMS Victory and HMS Warrior; the Mary Rose is there also and frankly rather boring. The D-Day Museum is worth a miss though.

Then the Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson, the forts around Portsmouth are fascinating and the stuff at Nelson together with the Fort itself is of interest.

Submarine Museum at HMS Dolphin (Take the harbour ferry from near the Dockyard)

Golden Lion at Southwick - ask Geoff. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

You may be able to get into the Map Room (Ike's office) at HMS Dryad, its all in limbo with the base being sold off, still operating and Southwick House being a piece of national heritage. Allegedly you need to contact the curator of Portsmouth Museum.

Best give me a call seeing as how I live 15 mins away. . . . . . . .

Just a stone's throw away...

from Dover is the Kent Battle of Britain Museum located on the old Hawkinge airfield overlooking Folkstone. Have a pint at the Cat and Custard Pot, close to the museum. A must see! Hendon is also very good. Cheers Rob

Thanks for the Suggestions ...

Much appreciated ! Did visit Duxford, C&C, Witham, IWM, HMS Belfast, Hendon and others north of London, during last years trip but didn't know about the Artillery Museum nor the Folkstone "stuff". Will add them to the list as well as the naval displays (no subs though ... too much water to bear thinking about the odds).

Route is fairly locked in as I will be ferrying family from relative to relative ... hope to be doing some tank driving while they "catch up on old times". Is the Salisbury Plain still used for tank training ?
Will I have to visit "Tanks-a-Lot" or can I use the gents out in Cornwal ?

Warning...

If you DON'T go to The Golden Lion in Southwick, I'll suspend your posting rights here... :D :p

Just do it and STFU. :smoker:

But, But ......

Geoff, if I paid your bar tab (I'm sure they'll grab the first Canadian thru the door), I wouldn't have enough money left to get home with the halftrack parts ....
