Fuel tank for light weight airborne Universal Carrier

1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys.

I was out checking out a scrap yard this morning and I stumbled over this. Turns out it is the smaller fuel tank as found in the light weight airborne Universal Carrier. I figure it has to be pretty rare. If anyone is interested let me know and Ill pick it up and either ship it to you or hold onto it. It measures about 10" square on the ends and its about 20" long. I did find a FMCO44 stamp on it. Just checking for the TL/CTL # but I think its under the paint.

What you can't see in that picture is the shaft that connected the sprockets to the glider wheels so that the gliders could be taxied after landing. The Hamilcar was so big, it was felt necessary to be able to park them to keep the LZ clear for other gliders.

The airborne variant utilised aluminium wheels as a weight saving measure, I am lucky enough to have a section of one of those very wheels... Obviously can't use it on anything but it's a nice oddity

Jordan, isn't that fuel tank just off another ford built vehicle?, never heard of carrier aluminium wheels?, didn't they just strip non essential parts of airborne dropped carriers to save weight?, quickest and easiest option. This website lists parts removed for arnhem landings.

Fuel tank

Looks similar to fuel tanks used on the generator units that used the jeep engine as power plant

shaun 01-04-16 22:29

Stiched up like a kipper !! PMSL !!!!

Lynn Eades 01-04-16 22:49

Well I have to admit that Kevin wasn't the only one that was "stitched up" :giveup
Now I want to know if it started with Richard or Adrian or Jordan?
BTW. April fools was yesterday.

tankbarrell 01-04-16 23:04

I don't know what you mean Lynn...... Its still April 1st here for a bit!

Jordan Baker 01-04-16 23:41

Apparently the contract date for these rare carriers was April 1, 1944.

Kevin and all, as another MLU'er told me, You fell for this hook line and aluminium sinker. :P

Actually the fuel tank has been correctly identified. It's from a Willys of France generator. It's a pretty close copy of the UC fuel tank except for being 2/3rds the size.

It was still April Fools Day in Canada when I posted this earlier today.

Alex van de Wetering 01-04-16 23:48

That was a good one! :D

No shame in it Kevin. Jordan makes up a lot of good stuff much the same as his April 1 offerings.

Absolutely, and to further encourage good behavior from Jordan, I'll not say a word about this pic...unless I have to.

Looks like track marks across the can. Methinks someone needs a safe driving course.

kevin powles 02-04-16 23:12

Na, the only 'fire' he took was from his understanding MV friends after the fact.

Lynn Eades 02-04-16 23:50

Jordan was just compacting the recycling, The young guys are more enviromentally focussed these days :D

Michael R. 03-04-16 00:22

Caption contest . . . again?

Jordan Baker 03-04-16 03:06

Hahaha that was fun times. Anyone can simply run over a large plastic barrel.....it takes some serious skill to drive over it length ways. The blue box didn't come out so well though. Pop cans everywhere. I had one "soccer mom" come running over (everyone else was ducking pop cans) and flag me down screaming I had something caught under the carrier. So I climb out and it's what's left of the blue box. I tell "yeah I ain't climbing under to get it, it'll come out on its own when it's ready". Get back in the carrier and drive off (had to finish taking a bunch a sea cadets for a ride). When I came back from dropping them off I found a rather busted up blue box about 100' away from the original incident. I simply followed the line of pop cans back.
