Carrier Bolt?
 

A friend found a bolt rattling around in the area of the steering cam plate. He is unsure of where it fell off from, and I cannot say I recognize it. His carrier is a mk1. I only got these photos yesterday, and unfortunately do not have any sizing information at this time. Anybody recognize it?

It looks like the bolt that holds the rod/fork from the steering column to the cam plate.

I have only seen slot drive pins with a jam nut on the bottom in that location. Was this something later?

That might be the bolt that plugs the horn conduit hole. Once the carriers had horns deleated some needed the hole pluged. A rather large bolt was used. It would be in the correct area for having been removed at some point.

Unless it is as Jordan has suggested, I don't think it is carrier at all.
Is it BSF ?
It looks like UNF Is there anything on the head?

To add to Bruce's suggestion, The Australians put a small shoulder on those cam plate screws (UNF), but I haven't seen them in a Canadian carrier. (not that I know about, or that we ever received any late model Canadian carriers over here)

I asked the same question about the threads. That would determine if it is from the engine/xmsn or from the hull. I am still waiting for an answer. I also asked about a head-shot. Many specialized carrier bolts would have the CTL number on the head.

Since it is painted on the head, but not on the shank, one had to assume it was bolted in place somewhere on the vehicle when painted and has since come loose.

It is too short for the cam plate.

It's a fitted shoulder bolt, so had something pivot/rotate around the plain part when fitted, most likely into a blind hole due to the length of the thread. Don't forget someone might of made it to replace an original they didn't have so might not look carrier. Have a good check of the camplate.

WHen I hear from him again, hopefully some more information will be forthcoming, such as size and thread pitch. I have a few more photos of it, and none of them really give an idea of scale.

I was thinking of something around the distributor, such as the bolt that the timing indicator slides on. I can't help thinking I have seen the bolt, and who knows, it may have rattled off an accessory like the Bren tripod or the pogo stick.

It does look like a bolt that may have come from the gun port???

Thread is 5/8-18 UNF and the head is 1-1/8 size.

I would think the UNF would pretty much preclude the hull fittings, and lead toward either the engine, transmission, or differential. Or it may be off some accessory that was in the carrier.

Perhaps it is one of the bolts that hold the diff to the hull? The manual lists those as 3/4". My parts manual is at work, but the bolt looks like one of the ones that hold the differential adapter to the casing. They have a shank.

Rob, as you know a carrier has big holes in the top and little ones in the bottom because of which they are very good at being handy bins (I think they are called dumpsters in North America) It (the bolt) doesn't look like it belongs at all unless, as you say, it is from an accessory (or something has been modified)
