The Australian Armour and Artillery Museum

Did anyone go to the opening of the AAAM?
Whats it like?

Luke.

Ryan 06-09-14 14:09

It's a big building with lots of tanks in it, but that's not important right now.

(flying high joke)

Tim Lovelock 07-09-14 00:54

Where is this mystery building?

Tim, it is in Cairns,Queensland,Australia.

They purchased a few items of interest from the Jaques Littlefield Collection sale the other week.

The most interesting item I think was the 'Toad'. The Churchill flail tank which cost an amazing amount in the UK when restored by R.R.Services in Kent and only sold for about 1/10 of the restoration cost. It was knocked down for a paltry USD$80,500. It was expected to bring between $500,000 and $650,00. So quite a bargain for Rob.

Regards Rick.

jdmcm 07-09-14 22:21

That explains the aggressive bidder from Australia!

Tim Lovelock 08-09-14 09:07

Thank you Rick, I will have to put it on my 'too see' list.
Cheers Tim

Luke R 02-11-14 10:51

So has anyone been into the museum yet?

Bob McNeill 02-11-14 12:11

visit

Yeah, we called in when we were up that way recently, dad was also up for my brothers b/ day and he was keen to have a look around. The shed is bigger than most house blocks and is getting bigger soon to fit the new arrivals in. Good collection of heavy tanks and arty, the ammo that's been collected for each piece is amazing, well worth the entry fee and easy to find.

Hi Cliff, yes they are a different colour but have a closer look and you'll see that the sand colour is of a solid plate without relief holes. :confused
Colin.

There were several patterns of sprocket ring. Cast, forged and plate as well as different manufacturers styles. All interchangeable.

Tim Bell 12-01-16 16:26

I understand from another forum that they will have a complete running Sherman Firefly also - though have not been able to confirm which version this is or where it has come from... anyone know?

Tim

Sascha G. 16-02-16 03:13

Really amazing collection, what a pity that it is that far away!

jdmcm 16-02-16 04:05

was that the same Kangaroo sitting at Adrian Barrells place...who did the restoration? Looks amazing

tankbarrell 16-02-16 08:56

It is one of the Rams that have been at mine. We did the repairs including a new section of lower hull, bulkhead, propshaft tunnel, wings etc. The restoration was carried out by C&C Military Services.

Niels V 16-02-16 09:15

Very impressive work quality when you see it in real life

Darrin Wright 16-02-16 11:52

With the Aust $ the way it is, it is about time that you all came down to visit, there is this Museum, the Corowa Military Vehicle rally/gathering is on in March, there is the Aust War Memorial in Canberra and several other collections and people of interest....

Look forward to seeing you all... :)

jdmcm 16-02-16 19:24

Well that sure is some nice work, I have had the pleasure of seeing the Sherman Carl restored for Paul Allen...top notch to say the least...how many more Kangaroos do you have kicking around Adrian?

tankbarrell 16-02-16 20:09

I did a lot of work on that Sherman too..... Carl and his team do good work and have taken on some difficult projects.

I have another Ram here, it was a gun tower though, not a kangaroo.

jdmcm 17-02-16 17:31

Sorry Adrian, Carl had told me you did a lot of work on the Paul Allen tank as well, did not mean to slight you

tankbarrell 17-02-16 18:37

No slight perceived! I wasn't trying to big myself up, honest....

jdmcm 18-02-16 03:34

No Need to! Your work speaks for itself!
