CF MAN photo reference picture

Here is a poor cell phone image of a print I bought last weekend.

It shows an 8 X 8 M.A.N. truck bearing the part CFR 63948.

It is seen coming off an M2 bridge (or that style).

Like the U1300 Unimog ambulances, these were supposed to only be used in Europe.

There is an allegation that a wrecker based on this truck made it back to Canada after the drawdown.

I don't think there was anything preventing us from bringing back equipment....the question was did we want it back here. The airforce brought a lot of it back only to distribute it around to bases that did not necessarily need it. I know we had a huge airfield crane sitting unassembled in MooseJaw until two guys spotted it and made an offer which NDHQ accepted. We had no need for large crash cranes in Moose Jaw since when a tutor went down you could load pretty much any of it by hand or with a much smaller crane.

When the German's left Shilo they sold some of their equipment very cheaply to us that they did not want to bring back. It included two range control unimogs, a MCI scenic cruiser bus, and a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria, which was their Commanders staff car. For some reason the German's loved those big Fords. Anyway, long story short the unimogs and the sedan were gone within a month or so, while the MCI went on for many years afterwards......might still be here but I would have to check.

If you get Scotty to run the CFR he can tell you where and when the MAN was disposed of.

Looks like there were 42 x 10 tonne MAN trucks:

2 x TRUCK, REPAIR AND RECOVERY, 10-TM, 8X8, W/45-TMM CRANEAND 20-TM WINCH, CDN 3.
20 x TRUCK, CARGO, 10-TM, 8X8, W/WINCH, CDN 1.
20 x TRUCK, CARGO, 10-TM, 8X8, W/12-TMM CRANE AND WINCH, CDN 2.

None appear to have made it back to Canada.

Thank you Scott for shedding light on this.

It is great to record our history on this forum and give it a place to live and be of use and educate others.

I will now go looking for more CFE kit

10 Ton Man

These trucks were bought I believe by then brigade commander Gen Fox to allow his logistical support to get with the times and deliver the goods. When they introduced females into the support services out with the combat arms units this was the vehicle of choice for some of the ladies. This truck supported us in the VIII CH with ammo and parts and it was a great truck just don't have the windows closed on the tank range. The smaller 7 tons built in Canada just sat in the 4 air def compound while I drove a 1976 5 ton with 2 fuel cells and a fuel trailer around Germany on my last year 91-92 keeping the Leopard C1's topped up. We also had 4 tank haulers Elephants I think they were called with FUMSU. I am still trying to get one of their combat slip ons for my collection.

Speak of the devil and it shows up. I believe this was the MCI was speaking of a few days ago, finally getting surplussed. Looks like we will be making a profit on this one if it sells for the minimum bid.
