Bayonet Identification needed.
5 Attachment(s)
I was recently bequeathed a number of bayonets, khukuris and foils by an old friend but I am unable to identify two of the bayonets.
Also included in the bequeath was a French Artillery Short Sword with the numbers 537 on the hilt. Attachment 66389 Attachment 66390 The first one is probably WWI vintage as the font of the marks look similar to other WWI bayonets I have. This one is longer being 16 3/16th inches (416mm) overall with a 11 inch blade (279mm). It has a large hooked quillon and has a spike type of blade with 4 sides. There is some machined flattening on the sides of the spike.( Different on each side.) The ricasso has some marks on the it. There are the letters SG on the lower side and unidentifiable crown or something on the upper. There are also an identifying mark E9?5 on the quillon. Attachment 66391 Attachment 66392 Attachment 66393 The second one is Asian in appearance as the mark looks Japanese or similar. It is just over 14 inches long (370mm) and has a blade of 9 5/8th inches (246mm). and a hooked quillon. Any help identifying these will be appreciated. Regards Rick. |

Bayonet ID
The first one, with the cruciform blade is an Italian Vetterli Truppi Speciali M1870. It was used in the italian colonies.
The second one I've had no luck with. It looks vaguely Belgiun in some regards and I can't seem to match it up to anything Japanese yet. It is possibly an export bayonet from a European country but nothing firm yet. Eric |
Thanks Eric for your reply. 111 lookers and you are the first to help. Could the second one be Turkish?
Regards Rick. |
Number 5 is a Swedish AG42b semi auto rifle bayonette if I am seeing clearly. WWII and postwar. The rifles are common in Canada, but the ammo is not anymore. If someone wanted to make a pairing, ask $125 and bargain down.

Hi Rick
Yes it certainly could be Turkish. The picture I have shows a knife bayonet for the M1903 Mauser rifle. According to The Bayonet Book it has an overall length of 14.875" (377.82mm) blade length of 10" (254mm) Muzzle ring dia of .610" (15.49mm) They state that it was of cruder construction than the M1903 sword bayonet and it lacks any manufacturing marks. It came with an all steel scabbard and there is the possibility that it was made later than 1903 and is possibly of Turkish manufacture. Eric |
