C60L replacement tyres
 

Hi All,

Looking to fit some replacement tyres to our C60L, originals are still in pretty good nick but have a lot of cracks.

We're wanting to temporarily replace these with something cheap for starters, until we can track down some genuine tyres to suit (funds permitting).

The truck will only be doing limited driving on roads - so we were wanting a tyre that is somewhat similar in tread pattern to the originals.

I have found a couple of options here in AUS, but not sure about the rim types they specify. Original tyres on the C60L are 10.50x20, options i have are as follows:

9.5-20 (950mm O/A diameter) to suite W8 agricultural rim. While the overall diameter is ~90mm less than the originals these do look the part. Just curious as to the W8 type rim is anything close to what is found on a CMP?

10.00-20 (1055mm O/A diameter) to suit 7.5 (i'm assuming inches) rim. Again what does the "7.5" mean? Is this bead width, and would it fit our rims?

best info I can give you is to go with 11.00 x 20 NDCC, you trim the rims on a lathe and they fit perfect , this only works if you can get them down under, some of the guys here have done it with the 1500 cwt`s and 9.00 x 16 NDCC,

Any military 11-20s that I have fitted to cmp rims went on perfectly with no trimming of the rim or the tire. The 9X16s, as Frank mentions, are another story.

Yes, the 7.5 will allude to the rim width at the beads.

Again - looking to put some cheap replacements on short term. So would either of the original tyres i mentioned fit a 20" CMP rim?

They look close enough just eye-balling, but to measure we would have to split and remove the existing tyres off (which i dont want to do just yet).

I have done a fair bit of research on the subject, but havent been able to find a lot so far. So it would be great to get some advise as to what will/wont work with these rims.

Welcome to MLU. Nice to hear of another Blitz on the road to recovery. Please post a few photos so we can see what you have and where you are heading.

MLU is the best place to get information and help in the world.

Don't take the tyres off you rims yet. There are plenty of 20" rims out there for you to restore. I have 5 or 6 here if you want some. Cheap too.

The 10.50-20 was replaced in service just after the war by the 11-00-20 and was a direct replacement on the WD divided rims used on CMP's and other Allied vehicles. No machining required.

As said by others US NDCC 11:00x20 are a direct replacement with no modification to rim necessary. I think your real question is driven by your location Bittern, VIC which not every one is noticing is in Australia, so if I might which tires or vehicles in Australia would be appropriate direct replacements which would not require modification to the tire or rim.

As stated US NDCC 11:00x20 make a nice replacement, they give a CMP a little rubber overdrive for the highway. As to them fitting the rims there has been an issue of some tires being made for a different rim angle. I have not found on any of my CMPs that this has been an issue. What I have found is that the rims need to be very clean and if possible painted. Passed experience as shown that cleaning the rim very is important. But be careful of over aggressive use of a sandblaster you want the remove the rust but not roughen the metal. Very fine grade blast media, clean then paint the rims let the paint really dry before mounting the tires.

You will appreciate the time and effort of cleaning and painting the rims the next time you un-mount a tire.

Only other modification to new tires I've encountered is needing to trim casting excess and smooth the lip of the tire that first makes contact with the rim. Use lots of the rubber lubricant.

With used tires cleaning the rim areas to remove any dirt, paint or rust.

Since you are only looking for cheap replacements until you can afford good ones , go to your local tyre service, get 10.00 X 20 or 11.00 X 20 drive [ lug ] tyres with some life left, trim the 15% inner edge off with sharp knife, fit and enjoy. road pattern are so much quieter.

US NDCC tyres will go on WD rims but they are very hard to get off. You will most likely find you will need to get a truck tyre centre to remove them. I recently fitted 10.50 x 16 tyres to WD rims. Tyres were 'Specialty Tyres of America" brand. One went flat and I had to get a truck place to press the tyre off. Problem is the 5 degree angle on US tyres which has been well covered in other threads on this forum.

You shouldn't break the bead on the 16 inch until you throw them out. Pull the rim half's apart and block them with wood blocks until you can pull the tube out one side at a time.

20 inch rims of mine have come apart very easy compared to the 16's.

When you do get whatever size 20" tire you decide to go with, do let us know how easily or tough they are to install. As I and some others have experienced, we have had no issues mounting 20" tires onto the 20 inch rims. Others are relating that they have. I suspect others are transferring the problems they had with 16" modern tires on the WD rims into this 20" discussion.

So let us know how it goes with 20" tires.

So will NDT tyres fit the WD rims as well? After looking into these they seem to be more readily available here in AUS compared to the NDCC.

What this all boils down to is that any 20" tyre should go on your 20" Blitz wheels so long as the width is not to different to the 10.50. I've seen them with 12.00 - 20 on them when cheap ex Acco tyres were about.

Be wary of agricultural tyres, some are marked 'for implement use only' or 'not for highway use' and may be strictly speed limited.

The W8 specification may refer to a load rating. Your tyre service should be able to tell you.
