One vs Two springs on the T16 suspension

I have been looking at my suspension arms and I have two sets with a spring inside a spring and two sets with just one spring.
Question- Was there a method to this or have one of the successive owners over the years added a set of springs?
I have the maintenance manual and it talks about spring removal and replacement but no mention of there being a second set inside the first.
Was this modification made on anyone else's carrier?

John, they all came out with an inner and outer spring. If you do a search you might find dimensions for them all. The outers of your carrier are different on the front bogie than the rear (single wheel) bogie. The inners are the same all round.
Can someone confirm this. I was so keen to answer this, that I overlooked it being a T16. Not so sure now.

hi john
if memory serves me correctly then the t16 does have double springs on the rear and single on the front.
the t16 suffered with rearing back when on a slope which resulted in less track on the ground and so less traction, a problem that never really got fixed despite the use of double springs, although I have seen a pic of 2 t16's doing ramp climbing trials one with normal setup and one with the rear bogie reversed and the modified set up was much better but was not adopted as far as I know.

Thanks for the replies.

I had assumed they would be for the rear set. Since they were not mentioned in the manual I was wondering if they were an after thought?

I have started "restoring" (rebuilding/transforming) my T16 bathtub into a Vickers command tank model 1937. Similar to the Dutchman but with a 2pdr gun.

I will start a thread on it soon, after I collect enough pics.

The T16 parts book I have details inner and outer springs (thats 8 springs per bogie) for the bogies and makes no mention of differing assemblies for front and rear units. It's dated April 1944 so perhaps there was a change later.
