Australian Vehicles that Went to Vietnam

Ok, it's been a while since I came in here, so I thought I would drop in and see if anybody knew of any documents that could help.

On REMLR i've been trying to pin down precisely which vehicles the Australian Army and RAAF sent to Vietnam. Now shipping records and records of convoys etc are a good source. I have some convoy orders which are invaluable, but only show a picture at any given point in time.

Shipping records I figured should exist somewhere, but I've no idea where to start looking. Navy Historic collection of any sort, AWM ??

Certainly we have the numbers from Mike's Excellent book mud and dust, I just want to try and fill in the blanks of what registrations those are so that there is a record for all to see.

The only vehicle I know that was in Vietnam that was a RAAF plated Kombi.

Actually it was better than a Kombi, it had the deluxe interior and the roof windows.

I cannot remember if it was LHD or not but always appeared when ever we came in Siagon.

I will make more inquires.

Most of our vehicles at Vung Tau appeared to have been borrowed from the Yanks.

However 2 Sqn maybe another story, I will make some inquires on that location.

I have some photos of a RAAF Plated Land Rover, as well as some army plated kombi's in Vietnam as well actually.

What I am really hoping to hunt down is more convoy orders and perhaps shipping records of what was in, or sent to and from Vietnam vehicle wise. Overall numbers have been researched and published by Mike Cecil in the excellent Mud and Dust, but on REMLR.com I would like to have a definitive list of vehicles to go alongside that research.

We know of many from photos and convoy records, but it is by no means definitive, or in may cases, properly referenced. The hope is to put an end to some of the arguments about this vehicle did or did not go by having that information available on REMLR alongside other information on military vehicles, and vehicle registrations.

Col: a Kombi as in Volkswagen Kombi?

I have some photos of the Kombi coming.

The vehicle was purchased in Australia and it must have been prior to 1968.

It was not a standard and was supplied by VW to the high standard as was used to transport VIP people.

Shortly you will able to view it
