"Tank" Parade

Does anyone have any further info about these photos? I searched for 'tank' on the Library & Archives Canada site and these popped up. A British victory parade? Can't recall seeing these before.

Berlin Vistory Parade
These are images from the Berlin Victory Parade which was held on 21 July, 1945. The images were taken looking west towards the Berlin Victory Column on the StraBe des 17 Juni.

Tank Engines
In 1995 I was at a 50th aniversary parade in Brisbane Australia, commemorating end of WWII, officially called VP day, meaning Victory in the Pacific. Used to be VJ as in Victory over Japan, but political correctness and all that... There was a single (modern) tank there which was shut down at time of my arrival. Following a minutes silence, the parade started and the tank was fired up to participate. Despite it being just the one vehicle, the sound and vibration through the entire area was just INCREDIBLE. The ground literally throbbed, shop windows rattled and the lid on a post box over 20 feet away clanged madly. That was an experience I will always remember. Spectacular!
Can't imagine what all those tanks in your photos must have sounded like. |
The Daimlers are the 11th Hussars and they are driving down the Charlottenburger Chaussee with the salute being taken by Winston Churchill. I think all the vehicles were from the 7th Armoured division.

Charlottenburger Chaussee
According to Google Maps, what had been called Charlottenburger Chaussee in 1945 is now StraBe 17 Juni. In 1953, the street was renamed Straße des 17. Juni, to commemorate the uprising of the East Berliner workers on 17 June 1953, when the Red Army and GDR Volkspolizei shot protesting workers.
The 21 July Parade consisted of British 7th Armoured Division and the Canadian Berlin Brigade. A much larger Allied parade was held in September. |
Thanks. Is there actual movie footage
still surviving of this, even in b&w? Sound would be a bonus but I'm not holding my breath on that...
