Works the same way I would think, two female sockets connected, second trailer lead connected in it so only the rear most trailer has lights. The one you picture is likely to be an earlier version.

I think you may be right ? but I still dont understand why it has been mounted on the trailer 'A' frame rather than the vehicle ?

If you are tandem towing two trailers, it connects the second lead to rearmost trailer, it has to be on the trailer, not the vehicle.
