Earthquake in Victoria (Australia)
 

5.2 on the Richter scale, centred near Moe in Gippsland, just before 9PM tonight. Here in Eltham the doors rattled, I could hear dogs barking all over the neighbourhood. Reports of building damage in Moe and surrounding areas.

In Briagolong the shed shook and the dogs went nuts. Something different for the day. Mike Kelly how did you go?

Must be something going on underground . Lake Keepit near Tamworth in NSW had a 4.2 shake on the 8th June.
Coincided with other shakes around the world at the identical time
Its data showed there were two distinct tremors and that it was the 10th tremor recorded in mainland Australia this week.
The NSW tremor had a depth of 17 kilometres.
Was enough to set the dam wall alert sirens off which I am sure would have made a few people pretty nervous as they have only just completed upgrade works to the wall

Apparantly there was a lunar eclipse early in June and this has an effect on the earth and the link here shows a warning of earthquakes on 30th May. you learn something new every day.

It was quite a good one ! Biggest I've ever been through . Windows shaking and things rattling and I was heading for the door to get outside .

No serious damage though , down in the Valley a shed fell down and some houses cracked walls etc.

Earthquake? What earthquake? I was sitting in a lounge chair and never noticed a thing. Meanwhile Jill was sitting about 3 feet away and the earth moved for her. I noticed that she was looking around trying to work out what was happening, but I never felt a thing. No.1 son rang to say that his couch hopped across the floor but he was disapointed that in the brick house he is in the middle of demolishing, nothing at all fell down. He was hoping that it would do the job for him.
Hope no-one got hurt.

I blame the Labor Govt. They should have stopped this sort of thing from happening in Australia. :D It's the end of the world I tell ya!

All their crap and hot air isnt flushing so it's blocking up the works , so naturally the pressure has to go somewhere :D

Simplisticly, while the majority of the world's earthquakes are concentrated along the edges of tectonic plates (eg like the trench just east of NZ) , the shifting along plate boundaries also causes the fault lines across the plate surfaces to build up pressure: these then have to move to reduce those forces. There are quakes happening all the time (which is good: relieves the pressure in small increments) , but they are mostly below the threshold of being 'felt' by humans.

Same here, I honestly thought the roof might come down. I was sitting at the computer which is right next to the front door - I was out in record time! I stood outside and watched the house shake and rattle for maybe 10 or 15 seconds. It was very weird to see. When I went to bed later on there was a 2 metre crack in the plaster directly above the pillows!

I live in Yarra Junction which is about half way b/w Melbourne and Moe which was the epicenter. My neighbour tells me we're on a fault line, but I'm not sure if that's true, because the agent who sold me the house never mentioned it.
