VE Day 65th anniversary in Netherlands

Hello All,

Question for our colleagues in Netherlands. Do you know if next May there will be commemorative activities as there was in 2004 for the 60th anniversary of the VE-Day. If yes, where and at what date?

Waiting for your answers.

Cheers from Canada

I'm going to Holland with a pipeband from Nova Scotia, for the celebrations. They have very much the same schedule as 2005. So there are definitely things happening.

Hello Gordon,

I'll probably be there as Rover Scout with my kilt. (Clan MacLaren like all Scouts who received the Wood Badge)

What is your program when you'll be there?

Cheers

There was a good newpaper article in the Otawa Sun on Tuesday, May 04, 2010 on "Brothers in arms reunited" Memory of friend in war never died for Canadian veteran....

It describes your project to place the ashes of Jean-Marie Leroy at the grave of his fallen friend Joseph Conrad Montcalm at the Groesbeck Canadian War Cemetary. I will send you a copy of the newpaper of the article.

I thank you for this final act on behalf of Jean-Marie Leroy.

Stuart

Hello Stuart,

The ceremony was very emotional and I let the younger brother of the Pfc Montcalm to pour the ashes of Jean-Marie Leroy in the hole where his brother Conrad is buried. For me, this ceremony was very hard because I left in this place the last link I had with the veteran friend Jean-Marie Leroy.

I want to thank Lcol John Roeterink who works as Canadian Defence Attaché to The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden & Finland in the Embassy of Canada in the Netherlands, as well as Dr Ian Hussein who has served as director of the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, for making this project happen.

Lest we forget

Hello Stuart,

During the ceremony of burying ashes, there was a Canadian military detachment behind us and some of these soldiers had gone to Afghanistan. One of them is come talk to me after the ceremony and he told that several of them wept during the burial of ashes because it reminded them of the loss of a comrade in Afghanistan. I confess it struck me much at this time.
