ME 109 toured Victoria , Australia

Sometime early in WW2 , a shot down German ME 109 fighter aircraft was shipped out to Victoria. It toured around the rural cities and towns, raising money for war bonds or similar. I know it was in Sale in East Gippsland , on display at a garage .

Does anyone have any more info ? Is it the example that ended up at the AWM ?

The Me109 was displayed at Preseneys, the ford dealership in Sale for a while.
The family still has the injector pump from it and another collector I know say's he has some bits from it.
It also toured around with V2 rocket.

the photo is the V2 in yarram
edit this photo of the bomb came from roland on the Hcvc forum.

V1

Interesting to see...

But this one is a V1 not V2.

Sorry, my mistake V1 rocket

Another (dodgy) photo of the V1 while in Sale

V1

Really interesting pics, thanks Luke!

Another small correction - the V1 was powered by a pulse jet, not a rocket. I've interviewed several Spitfire, Mosquito and Typhoon pilots who intercepted these and either shot them down or toppled the gyros by carefully lifting a wing under theirs.
In their logbooks they listed the trips as 'anti-diver' patrols.

Yarram

Quite an amazing pic of the V1 at Yarram .

Wonder where the blond youth in the foreground is now. He would be about 80 now

It looks like the V1 at Sale is actually flying !

Geez Keith I cant win ha ha, yes Ive heard about tipping the V1, it was safer than shooting having one blow up in front of you.

Did any other german equipment make it out here during the war?

YES Ryan

They grabbed a Demag half track and a Sd Kf 223 armoured car from Nth Africa .

the remains of the Demag were recovered by a friend in 1983 ? from Kaniva in the Mallee . A farmer there had bought it from Hughes trading just after WW2 , he cut in in half and made a crawler tractor out of it . The hull had mine blast holes in it . We found a few 9mm rounds in the hull , down in the dregs

I had it stored at my place . The vacuum assist change gear box was still in it . A little swastika stamp on it .

Yep, heard that too, I had the same reaction.
What of the 251 Halftrack?
Do you have any pics of the Demag Mike?

No I dont . It was still finished in the blue/grey Wermacht paint scheme , faded of course . Sadly too much of it was missing , the tracks and lower hull were complete , but all of the upper hull section was gone .

It was sold to a chap in South Australia .

We believe this was the vehicle that the engine was salvaged from by Stan Jones for his racing car . My friend did a lot of research and met the old racing car guys who confirmed the theory.

BTW the half track pictured beside the armoured car at Fish. Bend isnt a Demag , its a larger variant .

A few photos of the Racing car here in its current form.

Hmmm: German 'stuff' that came to Australia during and just post- WW2 (just the larger stuff: the small stuff like small arms is just too numerous to list here!)

Now this list is from memory, so don't cane me if I get it a bit awry:

(1) V1
(2) V2 (x2)
(3) Vidalwagen (x2)
(4) Meilerwagen
(5) Oxygen trailer (for V2)
(6) Bf 109
(7) PzKw III
(8) PzKw I
(9) Demag semi-track (1 ton?): unarmoured
(10) Semi-track, I think 7 ton? Have to look at the images to confirm size
(11) Horsch field car or light armoured car (remains found in Tasmania many years ago)
(12) Me 262
(14) various rocket/missile technology items, the names of which escape me at the moment; HS-293(?) anti-shipping guided missile comes to mind,
(15) various field guns/howitzers/AT guns (105mm, 88mm, squeeze bore weapon, Light RCL for paratroop use, etc etc
(16) various LAA weapons, trailer mounted.
(17) Puma heavy armoured car

There was also an Italian CV33 tankette.

The 'Tiger Tank' is a fairy tale as far as I can tell, but I'd be happy to be PROVED wrong!!

Mentioning Italian gear , the two Fiat SPA artillery trators, one of them is running now , without bodywork . The owner had it displayed at the Warragul old fairs show, with some 1950's era pics of it on a farm in Gippsland , with the body still on it . he bought it form Belfields auction.

I believe one of the Hughes, of Hughes trading Coburg went to Europe just post WW2 and bought some WW2 German gear. The 2 stroke generators that we know of , and a VMVC member bought them there at Hughes in the late 1980's .

Ryan 17-03-12 09:40

german stuff

That list is impressive, would love to see the Pz I and Pz III, even their remains. The only thing to do with a Tiger tank I have seen in Australia was an original manual on ebay for sale in Adelaide. It sold for over $1000.
Here's a bit of german kit on Aust ebay right now, a generator:

Mike, Did one of the Fiats have a fork lift fitted to it at one stage while on the farm?

Mike K 17-03-12 13:59

Hi Luke

No I didn't see a fork lift on it .

The present owner had a display board with it at the show , and many pics of it . He claimed it was shipped to New Guinea during WW2 and used there, which I thought was fanciful . He started it and ran the motor and it certainly is a mechanical wonder .

A German Panzerjager 1 fur 47 PAK (t) self-propelled anti-tank gun. It was equipped with a 4.7 cm Czech made anti tank gun. The gun has been reconditioned by the Australian Army Ordnance corps, and is on display in Collins Street during a Liberty Loan Rally.

Anyone else remember anything German from WW2 that was imported to Australia?

Then there was the shiploads of 'gear' from WW1, of course..... a whole other area of interest!

Yes , often seen derelect in council parks dotted around Australia . Or, the odd RSL as in Deloraine Tasmania, where a pair of German WW1 trench mortar guns are out the front .
