CMP C8 HUP Advise

I'm parting with my Hotchkiss m201 and am going to see a C8 HUP to buy, I hope, as a more thoroughbred replacement. I know nothing about CMP's other than the early Chevy engine used a splash & hope lube system, which sounds a bit dubious. Any fatherly advise on what weaknesses to look out for would be much appreciated. I already own a 1943 Morris Commercial C4 GS, which is a grand old lady and has involved a fair bit of restoration. Regards Jerry

Where to start on discussions of HUPs

Hi Jerry

Welcome to the insanity of CMPs HUPs are great. Over the years there has been many discussions threads on HUPs.

Current MLU threads:

http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=17780 2012 - Hammond Hijinks
http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=16411 C8A HUW restoration in Greece
http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=15965 New Hampshire CMP Barn 2011 HUP Overhaul
Then my own web site site with lots of HUP info http://canadianmilitarypattern.com/

Take a look around these as start, then start asking questions, like sources for manuals, modern part numbers equivalents, known issues to look for in restoration, the answers I'm sure will come from various MLU members. I always love it when somebody new to CMPs starts asking questions, because after 30 years of owning a HUP from the questions and the responses I always learn something new.

Cheers Phil

Is it the extended wheelbase version , with the gap between the cab and body ?

PICS please, or this will happen to you :no4:

Mike If it's a pic of the C4 you want, here she was last year. As you can see she's a mk1. Her history is detailed in the MLU Naval section c/o & thanks to Richard Farrant's good work. I've done a bit since the photo was taken and repaired her buck (wet rot in a couple of places), repainted her and had her Naval numbers sign-written. I've done a fair amount of mechanical catch up work on her. When I've finished I'll send you a pic if you want?

But it's the C8 HUP that's of interest, so far thanks to everyone who's replied it seems I need to look out for cracking body mounts & tin worm. I'm concerned if the early engines are a worry and noone's mentioned any transfer box or front axle seals problems etc.. Are they bomb proof?

Jerry
