Hi Lars

Very interested to see that catalogue! I have the remains of a VK62-B Dodge lorry of a type similar to the crew bus shown in the Premier catalogue. Do you have any clearer or other images showing VK62 Dodges that you could email to me? I am keen to get as much info as possible on this type of 3 ton Dodge.

Thanks!
Rick

Southampton?

I am conjecting that the port with the crane is the New Docks Extension at Southampton. I thought initially that Premier had been buying up refurbs by General Motors Limited in their nearby building. I am convinced that the companies had to deal with GM Limited, although clearly if you wanted to start your own war, Staghounds, Carriers and Greyhounds were there in your catalogue!

The Dodge VK-62 trucks were to ex-French contract, and S/M 2017. If the Ford F60T combos were British, they were to S/M 2857.

S/M?

hi David

Forgive my ignorance in these matters :) what is the S/M reference you mentioned???

In the pic of the VK bus it is an all over light colour - do you think thats the colour it would have been during the war, or a lick of paint that Premier would have given it to ready it for civvy life?

(Mine was bought by a guy after the war who lived down nr S/hampton)

Demand

Right, perhaps I can explain that when the Ministry of Supply placed OVERSEAS orders for wheeled armoured and softskin vehicles and also spare parts, they issued a Demand which was a contract, and called them 'Supply-Mechanical ....', which was shortened to 'S.M.', 'S-M' and 'S/M'. The series for softskins started with S/M 2002 although there may have been a S/M 2001...and went into the S/M 3000 series and then 6000, with spare parts in the 5000 series and armoured wheeled vehicles inthe 1000 series. Each new Demand had a sequential number. S/M 2007 to 2018 from memory were diverted ex-French orders and 2017 was for Dodge VK-62 or WK-62 trucks, either G/S or those bus bodies for the RAF. The repaint job was almost certainly done in the workshops, and this was usual.

There were also some overseas TRAILER contracts which has 'S/M' Demand numbers.
