ILTIS mystery body hole

2 Attachment(s)
Several Iltis have a hole about 2-inch dia drilled through the body on the driver side above the rear wheel well. there are four very small screw holes as well

Ive heard a number of opnions about what went there, but does anyone know positively what went there, and any photos or line drawings of
whatever fixture went there? either inside or outside.

While I could do body work on the jeep to fill in the hole, Id much prefer to get the actual fixture to put back in the hole.

Ah ha! The ILTIS comb!

Indulge this old timer ....

Marc Montgomery 08-05-11 03:41

Ive added a photo.. If anyone has a photo of an Iltis with a fixture of some sort in this location...i think that would help.

How many other owners of Iltis on this forum have this hole or have seen one like it? This may have been a theatre mod, as mine was in Bosnia...possibly even the force commander's jeep- some indication of that, but definitely not confirmed yet.

Matthew Reid 08-05-11 05:23

I have seen this hole on a few Itlis's And i'm sure i have pic some where of the item that was fixed in this location.

Give me a chance to go through my pics.

I'm convinced it was for a Slave Cable Outlet. Dimensionally it's identical, and in a much more useful place than the cheesy location under the dash. Either way, I'm curious, as I've never seen this done to any of the ones I used.

rob love 08-05-11 16:44

I was also thinking that the dimensions were similar to the old 2 pin slave, but there are a few problems with that location. It would require some filler blocks to properly mount over the stamped rib, and sticking beyond the side is not a normal place to extend equipment. I am thinking it was more likely something to do with the TCCCs systems, but that is purely a guess.

The army got serious about the unauthorised mods when the Iltis came out. Some of the older jeeps had more oddball holes in them than swiss cheese, between map boards, goody boxes, and the odd stereos.

The thing that puts me off a bit is that I can't think of anything to do with TCCCS that uses a plug or cable anywhere near 2" in diameter. I'm still thinking Slave Cable or Generator Plug, but either way, strange.....

Marc Montgomery 08-05-11 17:21

yep, had a few guesses that it was for Tics, and Scotty's suggestion of a slave outlet..but Im surprised at how few photos there are of the drivers side of Iltis. but so far no definitive answer, photos, etc.

i know one guy who put a military outliet from a truck shelter box into the hole, as he had a dynamo or something in the back.

As mentioned, Ive seen several with the holes. Unfortunately, my jeep is not handy so I cant get the exact diameter

rob love 08-05-11 18:51

While a DC socket would not stick out so far, and therefore be a possibility, it seems to me that the bolt pattern for them was more squarish, whereas this one is more the shape of a slave receptacle.

The engineers in Ottawa made a mistake on the M109s and installed a slave cable outlet onto the back of the turret. The idea was that a small 2kw generator, mounted on the back of the turret, would keep the batteries charged up rather than having to run the main engine of the M109. Only problem was that the troops found it much easier to hook their slave cables to that outlet. The turret ring commutator brushes were not made to have 300 or more amps run through them on a cold start. A DC receptacle would have been the correct item to have been installed there, but the bolt patterns were not the same so there was no easy fix.

Not sure if any of this will answer your question, but I took some pics of a TCCCS RT-522 Installation installed in a G-Wagon. Its a Single IKEE, but really, other than a Second Radio and AMU, the install parts are essentially the same.

One can surmise that in all reality, the electronic parts should have been the same in an Iltis, and really, the install itself should have been very similar. Keep in mind, the G-Wagon is a fully enclosed "hard top" vehicle, so by rights, any Comms related "Ports" that need to be hard mounted outside will have been done to it.

Rad A installed in Doghouse with the NAU mounted on top. I'll ask one of the TCCCS literate guys what the "V1" Port is for as it is 1.5" OD. I suspect it is for an Amp:

I may copy the way these are locked on my own Radios:

Radio Interface Panel with Power Switch. Kinda like a uber-modern version of the old Bendix Connection. Don't get excited, those plugs are all only 1.25" OD :D :

Control Indicator or "CI" mounted on the Dash, you can also see the new DAGR GPS Holder over on the A Pillar:

Another angle on the CI:

New Style Single Pin Slave Cable Outlet:

Lastly, for those of you guys who like to stencil stuff, there is an example of how the vehicle tools are marked (notice that the numbers don't match, and the neither are the same as the CFR on the truck :) ):

Again, not sure if any of this helps in your quest, but as you can see, there aren't really any 2" Plugs on any of the TCCCS kit that go to the outside of the vehicle.

Scott Bentley 10-05-11 21:11

Apparently i'll start eating some Crow now.

Through my own research of Combat Camera, I found a picture of the "Plug".

The hole is from an External Power Cable for the "new" IKEE:
The Hi-Res is here: http://www.combatcamera.forces.gc.ca...hotos&download

That is a ton of collateral damage for this little plug:
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data.../Mil_Pics1.jpg

Although not a part of the Comms Install itself, this is an external plug to connect to the IKEE on the inside:

As a side note Mont, one of the Iltis in the pic is probably yours as that was the Roto it was part of based on our off-line discussions.

Marc Montgomery 11-05-11 02:00

AHA! very cool photos! I am curious, the little plug on the G-wagen appears to have a smaller squarish plate than the one on the iltis..which is clearly larger and rectangular.. (?!?!?)

so what would that plug be connected to on the inside? is it a direct hookup to something..or cabled to something

Scotty thanks for all your help!

BTW- notice on the first jeep theres a tube(?) appears to exit the body at the back..I wonder what that was

Scott Bentley 11-05-11 02:17

Marc,

As noted in the pics above, that Plug is connected to the Power Supply on the inside. No idea if it's for taking on or providing power out. Dunno, never seen it used.

No idea why they butchered the body to install a 15mm Plug. Stranger things have happened. Good luck finding one though. With the TCCCS having all sorts of voodoo crypto abilities built in, I doubt they will ever see the light of day outside of the CF (through official channels) which IMO, makes trying to mimic the Comms system an exercise in futility.

well, no intention of attempting a tics system..however, wouldnt mind getting the right plug for the hole...un-officially if need be ;-)

you can see the screw holes if you look closely indicating a very rectangular plate- I"ll have to get exact measurements at end of May

here's a slightly better photo

Mystery hole

Marc, have a look...

I remembered seeing that hole somewhere or what might belonged there back in the day and here is that picture I've been looking for. If this is correct or not I don't know but it looks to fit ok.

Paul

Marc Montgomery 11-05-11 13:02

hey, thanks for the photo Paul ! but, now that is interesting..and confusing...

The fixture on Scotts photo of Iltis in theatre, is the right size, rectangular shape and location to match the holes in my and other Iltis, and the "connector" resembles the comms outlet on the G-wagen
BUT the Gwagen fixture mounting plate does not seem to match, being smaller and square

Paul's slave outlet mounting plate also has the right shape, size, and location: it goes with what Scotty's initial theory was..BUT, on the other hand, the photo of the jeep in theatre clearly is not a slave outlet.

so..it seems narrowed down...could it be there were/are different comms fixture suppliers and the "older" ones had larget backing plates..

or- some were modified for slave fixtures, others for comms..

Is there a CFTO on this?

I guess I could stick a dummy slave outlet there but anybody know someone who served in Bosnia, perhaps comms, perhaps mechanic,, or was of the 80's era and might know or remember?

well that`s excellent. !! at last a photo which clearly shows the mounting plate with correct placement of holes through the body. and the fixture itself...

Who`s jeep is that and or where to get an up close look and take some measurements.... unless its possible to get one of these plates and fixtures.. (asking even more hopefully)
I presume the fixture itself is not an integral part of the unit mounted behind it?

what does IKEE stand for please?

Marc Montgomery 14-02-12 03:27

I will be often around the kingston Gananoque area this summer, we could meet for sure. In fact, will be down that way at end Feb.

makes sense re the remote radio operation. If its for an rt-524 model, then should be available somewhere shouldnt it? and, or, is it a universal connection that worked also with TCCCS?

any answer to the other questions?
