Penetrating Oil

Machinist Workshop magazine recently tested penetrating oils for break-out torque on rusted nuts. They "scientifically rusted" a bunch of nuts, treated them with various penetrants, and then measured the torque it took to remove them. Here are the results:

- Nothing__________516 pounds
- WD-40___________238 pounds
- PB Blaster _______214 pounds
- Liquid Wrench_____127 Pounds
- Kano Kroil________106 pounds
- ATF-Acetone Mix___53 pounds

The ATF/Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50-50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note that the "home brew" was better than any commercial product.

Ed's Red

There is a body of folk-knowledge that Ed's Red homebrew gun cleaning solvent is as good or better than most of the commercial potions. Automatic Transmission Fluid and Acetone are 2 of the ingredients.

Worth the read to understand both the original ingredients (sperm whale oil) and the modern substitutes, and what the actions are acting upon.
