Wanted: WW2 Wheeled armoured vehicle

Gidday,

I am still on the lookout for a WW2 wheeled armoured vehicle, such as M3 scout car, Daimler Dingo, Lynx, M20, M8, Morris/Ford gun tractor etc.

Must be restored or at least a good runner.

Would also consider Ferret Mk 1 or Mk ½ or a Fox.

Not much for sale in NZ at present so am keen to see what is out there, especially in aussie. I will be in Corowa in March so would be keen to make contact with anyone who is selling or considering selling.

PM me please if you have anything on the market or if I could twist your arm into selling.

Thanks.

Darryl

Darryl,

Can't help with info on what is available in your part of the world, but contrary to what some sources say those gun tractors were not armoured.
However, if you get the chance to buy one restored, jump to the occasion!

Darryl,

Ah yes, I see the early sign of CMPitis: you have discovered the beauty of these trucks, no return to sanity possible now :D

Although they are not armoured, I am sure There's a Ford in your future! once I tell you they really do fly. . .

I have a Fox CVR for sale. Most parts except no engine pack. These however have just been released a plenty over here.
Main problem is I'm in Scotland!

Not restored or running Darryl, but it looks to be a complete uncut M3 Scout Car Armoured Observation Post plus spare armour on AU E-bay

Flying CMPs

CMP's can certainly fly it just the landing that causes problems.

G'day Darryl,

That M3A1 White Scoutcar for sale in Australia is one of the more complete examples to come on the market for years. It is minus the engine and gearbox but to have the front roller, which is steel not concrete, is a bonus. I have driven my White for more than 100,000km. They are a great rally vehicle. I get around 15 mpg at 80km.

Have you entered for Corowa? Only $10-00 entry and you'll get a Rally-pack with many interesting bits.

Make sure we meet up at Corowa.

Regards Rick

Afternoon chaps,

Thanks for the replies.

Yes. This M3 does look very interesting. As you say, it all seems to be there. I'm presuming it is still easy to source a complete Hercules engine and gearbox from the US/Europe?

Tony - are we going to see you down here next month? If not, hope to catch up with you either at Corowa or in Wanaka in April.

Rick - am registered for Corowa and am looking forward to it. I saw your M3 on one of the previous year's DVD's. Would be very keen to get one of these. We don't see many over here. Will catch up with you at Corowa.

Cheers

Darryl

More the Ebay White Scoutcar.

The Australian Army Registration Number was 123678 . The original engine number was 1308790. This scoutcar was disposed of on 07th March 1958. It was listed for disposal on disposal list M60/1BOD/GP/L20.

I guess 1BOD is in Queensland, as 2BOD was NSW and 3BOD was at Seymour in Victoria.

Darryl, the Hercules JXD engine is the same as used in the Studebaker 6x6, of which there are a few around in Aus. I'm not sure about the gearbox used in the White. Rick, any suggestions?

I'd like to get to Dunners in Feb. I missed out on Labour Weekend due work commitments, I missed out on Edendale due to work commitments. I might feel sick late Feb. :rolleyes Wanaka is locked in. :thup2:

The Canty NZAAHA Pres we spoke of before has a White Scout Car which is also an ex-Aussie one. You might like to have a word to him about it or scoot up to Chch for a drive.

oztankboy 24-01-10 15:32

I have been led to believe the the JXD that is in the M3A1 White Scout car in infact a high compression model that produces more HP and was the same as used in the M8 and M20 Greyhound armoured cars. That the one used in the US6x6 Stud in a low compression model.

Phil...

lynx42 25-01-10 00:01

Phil, you may be right. I haven't heard that the Studebaker JXD is of a lower compression. I thought it was the same as all the internal parts and the head are interchangeable between the White Scoutcar and the Studebaker. The only differences are the Exhaust/inlet manifold and the fuel pump. The fuel pump is on the opposite side to the one on the White and is driven by a pushrod from the camshaft. On the White it drives straight off the camshaft.

Tony, The gear box is a White 4 speed box and is therefore different to the Studebaker 5 speed. Peter Frazer in QLD fitted a Studebaker gearbox to his White with much success. He also fitted a different transfercase to give front axle declutch.

The White Scoutcar on Ebay Australia sold for AU$5,850. A good price, especially when there was another much sought after set of original rear armour and at least 2 bonnets. Many other axle and brake parts and fittings as well.

If the purchaser is a MLU watcher, will you please contact me so I can list this one on the White Scoutcar Register.

Thanks
Rick.

I was watching that auction too. It did recieve a bid of $10,000 and then the advert was ended within the day. Maybe the seller was satisfied with the result?

cletrac (RIP) 28-01-10 14:33

If the auction closed early it either sold outside of ebay or ebay stopped the auction.

A bit of sleuthing uncovered the reason the other White Scout Car dissapeared off Ebay.
The owner purchased the Rockhampton one and will build one good one out of the 2+ he now owns.

WW2 armour

Hi Doug,

I actually grew up in Auckland and I much prefer the weather (and the lifestyle) in Dunedin. It is true that it is rather cool compared with Auckland but overall it is a great place to live.

A little extra armour always helps though!

Regards

Darryl
