Ford Truck I.D.

Hello all,
My first post on MLU :) I am tied up with Studebaker Weasel restoration at the moment but a few years back I was given a Ford Truck. I believe that it is ex military. Would a ford truck Guru out there be able to properly identify this truck for me and better still post any photos that show what kind of tray was on the back of it?

Hi John

Not sure about it's military heritage but the sheet metal looks to be 1941. Very short wheelbase too. Is there any khaki paint anywhere?
No hatch or opening windscreen.
Perhaps one of our resident experts like 'the non-genuine' Tony Smith can shed further light.

Keith,
It does indeed have a hinged(pop out) windscreen and on the passenger side door there is a paint shadow highlighting where a cross shaped bracket was mounted. There are also 3 stake nuts in the door to accept this (unknown) bracket. Of interest, all of the die cast Ford bling has been painted over. Also there is no sign of chrome anywhere. One last thing it has split rims. Thats all I know.

There should be an ID plate on the firewall identifying what model but as Keith said it appears to be a 1941. More then likely it could be a 1 ton utility type vehicle which had a style side ute type body on the rear similar to the AWM picture below..

It is a 1941 ex-mil model 11Y van, with a 122"wb (I think the spare tyre on your car trailer might have thrown Keith's ID a bit!). The variants included a 1 Ton GS Van, 1 Ton Wireless Signals Van, 1 Ton Cable-laying Van, 1 Ton Office Van, and 1 Ton Battery Staff Van, so the body styles varied. You can see some variations in this thread.

There will be a serial number stamped in the firewall, but this just identifies the basic truck cab serial, and gives no clue to the actual variant. Although these 1 Ton vans had the model code 11Y, the cab sheetmetal is stamped 11T for a 3 Ton truck.
11T: 1941 3 Ton truck
81: 1938-42 221ci 85hp engine
DD: Department of Defence? (ie not civilian truck?)
1118: Individual serial No of cab.

The 11Y is fitted with the heavy 900 X 16 split military wheels ..unique to Australia on that model I believe . Being the wheels are so heavy, the 11Y models are prone to king pin wear . The front axle is really meant to take civilian 17" wheels ( fitted to the 1940 army model ), which I think look better proportioned . The army also had the 1939 cameo grill model too ..

I junked some of those 11Y wheels years ago ... didn't fit my 11D . BTW Cliffs AWM parade pic is a 11D , the wheels are the giveaway. The 11D is 95% same as the 11Y , but is fitted with Ford passenger car type 16 " wheels ... but the rims are wider to take 7.50 tyres ..very odd - it also runs the normal small car brakes adapted to the big 1 Ton rear axle and it is listed as a 3/4 ton truck in the Ford literature .

There is one of those utes currently in France somewhere on a Cooks tour :drunk:

Sorry it has been a long time coming but finally I have some photos showing the serial #'s on the firewall and the windscreen hinge arrangement to help you better identify this Ford treasure.
