Ausy Armour

I found this image recently...purporting to be an Ausy AC on Lend Lease to the Americans, in the Pacific.
I find it intetrsting knowing the Lend Lease went both ways.

is this a an LP AC as I havent seen anything like it.....
perhaps its a 'Rhino', of which I know nothing about.

My copy of "Canada's Fighting Vehicles. Europe 1943-45' says 9,494 rear engined chassis were produced in Canada, and all went to India.
Some came here (New Zealand) to be made into Indian Pattern Armoured Cars and some went to Australia, how many?

thanks in advance,
Brent.

It is not a Rhino which was a true armoured car with a turret but I think it is a CMP truck chassis with an armoured body similar to the White half track Body (open rear). They were made here in Oz for the US. I have other photos of them somewhere and not many were made but one survives in a museum in North Queensland.

That has a front mounted engine,

And a load space at the rear. An interesting vehicle.

Are those 16 inch rims? And Ford or Chev?

Yes, they were 16" built on Ford chassis, the one pictured was the only F15A version, the others were built on F15 chassis, so these were conventional front engine vehicles. They have the familiar Ford engine cover inside too.

The other Ford CMP based Aussie armoured car was the less than successful Rover, built on both the 134 1/4" and 158 1/4" chassis, then there was the and the Ford Dingo scout car which was not a CMP but used MH transfer case and axle on an interesting cut and dropped chassis layout.

It's even in Wikipedia with these images coming from the AWM by the look of it.

The Rhino looks just a tad top heavy, wonder how many of us could fit through the side access hatch these days.....

thanks Keith, Interesting vehicle, I rather like the 'chain mail'......agree with Rich it looks cumbersome....
but LP was important in 'the day'.

Wikipedia is vast, but so open to optimistic renderings.

thats well heeled vehicle Hanno...Browning 1917 & Browning .50....

Brent.

In Hanno's reference to an earlier discussion on the Australian Scout Car S1 there are a couple YouTube links there which are now broken, since I had to re-edit and re-upload my videos. Here is the new link to that first video in which there are a couple minutes of footage of Bob Schutt's restored S1 starting from 1:50 through to 3:54 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20iu-ZH2j7o
