Ford Water Pump Pulley

Hi all,
You may recall a few weeks ago I let you all know of a chap selling Ford V8 Water Pump kits. I bought two and installed them. Here's my advice. If possible re-use the original bronze bushes. I installed both kits and started it up and almost imediately the brass bush picked up and began to smloke. An old mechanic told be, never use the brass bushes as bronze is better because it is self lubricating?
Then, the engine was running beautifullywhen one of the pulleys decided to fly off. We took the pump off and re-pressed it back on with Locktite. Next day, before I re-installed it, I put the impellor in a vice and tried to turn by hand. Yep, I was able to turn it.The Locktite didnt really work. I can only assume the gap was too large for Locktite to work.
Question. Has anyone got any remedies for loose pulleys, or does anyone have a couple lying around that I could buy? Single belt type.
I look forward to help.
Cheers
Darren

Which type of Loctite did you use? You need the special stuff for loose fitting bearings and it should work. If not you could always try JB Weld but you'd never be able to disassemble again.

I have solved this problem on other machines by drilling and taping a hole through the pully in the bottom of the V. The belt then hides your work. After you drill the pully assemble and drill a notch in the shaft, then tap the pully and use a grub screw with an allen key head.

oil soaking

An old mechanics trick and recomended in manuals ..You soak the new bushes in oil overnight , before installing them..The new bushes should have been oil friendly bronze bushes ..not plain brass. The water pump repair business' use the correct stuff ..not brass. There was a brand name 'oilrite' or something , for those bronze bushes.

That's "oilite" bushings. Every machinery dealership usually has an assortment of them.

Oilite bronze bushes

As in Lucas Commutator end, armature bushes. Sit it on your thumb. Fil it with engine oil. Put your finger over the other end, and then squeeze. The oil will flow through the walls of the bush. Let it drain, and then install it.
Note. These bushes are sintered bronze. They are made frome small bronze balls, and have air gaps in them for the oil. This does not apply to other forms of bronze bush. I doubt that the bushes in the water pumps are made of sintered bronze.
