Speedometer Cable question
Hi everyone
I managed to pickup an original UCarrier speedometer cable and was wondering if the core needs to have grease added to it. Ive taken it all apart and cleaned up the outside covering but the insides were very clean and free of any grease. My uncle was thinking it should have some grease. What should it be, grease or not? Anyhelp is much appreciated. |
Hi Jordan, I would apply grease, I HAVE A NEW OLD STOCK SPEEDO DRIVE CABLE WHICH IS HEAVILY GREASED. So i would guess grease needs to be applied to the cable before threading it through. If you can get another a outer sheath let me know.
THANKS KEVIN. P.S. I have the tube now. |
Any special kind of grease?
Glad to hear you got your tube. Sorry I didn't reply earlier |

DON'T grease that cable... Dry molybdenum disulphide or graphite only.. Grease attracts dirt and dust and will eventually harden and seize or break and you will be putting in a new one...The cable is designed to spin freely in the sheath..DO NOT Grease.. Grease should only be applied to the OUTSIDE of the sheath to protect it from rust and water.. :drunk: :remember |
Is it grease or cosmoline
If the cable was NOS military my first thought would be is it really grease or is it cosmoline. I have no experience with Carriers but I have never come across a greased speedometer cable on CMP trucks.
Also I have not found anything in any of the manuals. Cheers Phil |
Thanks for the input.
This cable is definalty not NOS. It came off of a wrecked carrier that was stripped of all usable and not so usable parts. At first I wasn't going to use it since the outer sheath was broken but then I realised that the rest was in great shape, only surface rust. So I cleaned it all up and made a little bracket out of stiff rubber hose to hold outer sheath together. There was no rust inside it or on the cable itself. The nice part about where it was broken was that you can't see it all as it is under a cover in the drivers compartment. I'd take a picture of my repair but I left my camera in Windsor while visiting some friends. :bang: |
