Noisey Fan Ford F30 13 cab
 

hello people i am wondering if anybody has been able to quieten down the fan noise on fords, i am half deaf now without adding to it.

Dave Ballard fitted the fan off a Land-Rover 101 (with visco clutch) on his F15. To be able to fit it to the generator he turned a special adapter from aluminium on a lathe. The fan in his truck is now very quiet and keeps the engine cool.

I had the wrong dynamo pulley on mine (from Fordson I think), so the fan was making to manny revs. Got propper one now , and as a result it is a lot better now.

Even on my C15A the fan is the noisiest thing about the truck. Once you get up and over the speed it used to go with the old 216, I run a 235. the resistance to turning sometimes overpowers the belt.
If anybody has a part # and brand for an aluminum fan with some flex I would like to know. Absolutly no room for a viscouse drive. I tried a 4 blade automotive fan but it couldn't move enough air by the engine and the cab just got unbearably hot, especially up the Fraser Canyon when it was 40 C out.

In the Fraser Canyon at 40 C it's going to be unbearably hot in that cab no matter what fan you use.

the original fan moved all the engine leakage too. It was the dog house that you could fry an egg on. The wind screens strait up let in lots of air. Actually that was the only part of any trip that I got to ride shotgun and stand up through the hatch. Luigi from Italy who owns a mint Ford LAAT drove it up the canyon from Hope to Lilloett. I put the other fan back on even though the motor never even got too hot. Those CMP rads can handle the north african desert.

There was a hot rod solution to the noisy fan on flat heads, my 49 Lincoln is fitted with one. Really quite clever it is an electric clutch on the hub of the fan shaft. Which had a simple sensor in one of the radiator return hoses when the return water go to 180 the sensor sent voltage to the clutch as the temperature increased the clutch got more voltage until it locked up. They even change the size of the pulley so at idle if the engine needed more cooling it spun faster than the engine. But when the engine was 180 or below the fan didn't turn so there was no fan noise. At road speed the fan is normally just windmilling slowly in the air coming through the radiator, strange to see the engine just after you stop open the hood look in the fan is turning as it slows down but the engine has stopped.

Lot of guys who have done the 235 or 261 engine swap on Chevy's have gone to electric fans but this dosen't look stock which is why I mention the electric clutch set up unless you know it is there everything looks stock. Might be worth checking some of the Hod Rod Flathead sites to see if anybody is making them still.
