Vegemite under threat

Food tax could see Vegemite off shelves
Thursday, January 08, 2009 » 11:36am

Vegemite is just one everyday foodstuff that may be forced off grocery shelves if a tax is imposed on energy dense foods.

The National Preventative Health Taskforce is expected to recommend the tax, to regulate fat, salt and sugar content in food and drinks.

Guys , Keith is going to need some moral support if this happens .

For all the members from overseas, this is what we're talking about. An Australian way of life :thup2:

G'day Alex

:yappy: no wonder the girls in the video don't like Vegemite...it's spread way toooo thick and not nearly enough butter on the toast (you gotta have lots) :teach: Take a look at the photograph. See how the toast has a light smear of Vegemite...yum, yum  Nice cuppa tea with a couple of pieces of Vegemited toast...what more could an Aussie man want (for breakfast that is) :coffee

Can you think of a name for the "New" Vegemite?

Keith Webb 14-06-09 18:51

Vegemite, let's go back to Parwill

A very daggy play on words...

Quote:

With its unusual and unique flavor, Vegemite was not an immediate success and sales were slow. In 1928 Vegemite was renamed and registered as Parwill in an attempt to boost its sales and to attract customers of the rival spread Marmite (an English yeast spread that dominated the Australian market sinc 1910). "If Marmite...then Parwill" was the rationale behind Walker's strategy to carve a niche in the market for his spread. The name Parwill and Walker's play on words didn't catch on. It was only sold as Parwill for a short time in Queensland. The name was withdrawn in 1935, and the original name was reinstated.

Vegemite -v-Marmite

We get Vegemite here..in supermarkets and the Aussie stuff not some ersatz stuff it seems. However Marmite has branched out into various packages, into cheddar cheese, on crisps and snacks, and just about everywhere they can. I suppose you get Marmite elsewhere? It's made out of yeast recovered from breweries by the way. 50% of the country loves it and 50% loathes it.

Speaking personally of course, I prefer Vegeguck over marmashite, but that's just me... :smoker:

I dunno why the hell they want to change Vegeguck from what it is, because frankly, it tastes great the way it is! Just don't eat it straight out of the jar - but on buttered toast it's fine. :teach:

Just ask Emma - it was the first thing I asked for once I got to the Hedges' establishment in '07... :D

Hmmmm

I think it's a solution in search of a problem. You can't improve on perfection...

Jif first tasted it in 2001 when I visited and it's obviously been close to his heart ever since.

You can't be a true CMP'er (not an Aussie one at least) without Vegemite clogging your veins. :thup2:
