C15A wrecker
Morning all,
C15A wreckers. Was there ever such a wartime truck? Or is this something that is a post war mod? The crane is stamped made in Scotland. Pics to follow as I'm not home at present. Any light shed is welcomed. |
No 15 cwt wreckers
As far as I know, all CMP and MCP wreckers were on 3 ton chassis. The two makers for the wrecker assembly thaat I know of were Holmes and GarWood.
It is possiblethat there might have been a 30 cwt wrecker although I haven't seen reference to one. Since the comments from the users were that the 3 ton based wreckers were lighter in capacity than they really wanted it seems that a 30cwt would have been even less useful. My guess is that any wrecker on a 15 cwt chassis or for that matter a 3 ton FAT chassis fitted with a cab so that it would look like a 15 cwt on oversize tires would have been next to useless as a wrecker for anything larger than a jeep. The same short wheelbase that would make it more manouverable would limit the suspended tow capability. Most likely the one you've found was a postwar assemblage of bits. |
i'm restoring my 12 cab c15a as a wrecker. mine will have a late 30's weaver crane on the back. i have discussed this topic at length with a recovery expert among us. although, to my knowledge there was never a factory built 15cwt wrecker, there were probably some made up as field mods, or locally built, when the need arose.

Thank you Grant and Mike. It's in pretty poor shape and is missing all it's ID tags. Apart from a Holden body tag under the bonnet.

The stampings on crane are most likely from the steel beam manufacturer in Scotland, not of the crane manufacturer. Hope this helps, H. |

I agree...no C or F 15 wreckers.. All as Grant says on 3 ton Chassis only..starting at the F and C-60S...The shocks, springs and frames were too light ,even on the F and C 30 models..although you will find F and C 30 Wreckers ,but with upgraded springs and suspensions to C and F 60 specs.. |
Cheers guys.
 |
