Blitz? and Jeeps

Auction/Cearing sale 3rd May, Wodonga/Bandianna
Extract from ad in "Rural"
......1945 Ford Army Truck,......
......2x Willys Jeeps, 1942 Willys Jeep, Willys Korean Jeep.......
I have loged a call to the agent and am awaiting a return call for details (a few hours ago). I am unsure if they have a total of 2 Jeeps, or Four. I have also asked for clarification on the Ford truck
Agent: Mike 0408578059, Clinton 0412454065
I will not be able to go to the auction myself.
I have no connection with Vendor or Agents.
Someone report please!

Richard Coutts-Smith 24-04-08 08:26

Hi Howard
I'll probably mosey along, I read it as two jeeps, and two trailers, all being outside entries, rumour has it that one of these items was burnt?. The truck is in with the vendor entries, will do a drive by during the week to have a look, but Blitz's are always advertised as such around here, so possibly one of the bonneted ones? No 4x4 in adv.
Rich.

Have veiwed all items that are in place, many items are still to come and be placed out for the sale.
The 45 Ford is actually a 42 Ford 4x2 civilian truck pressed into military service- no tray, tyres poor con, lots of spider webs, side valve engine with all plugs removed. This truck has the big round long bonnet.
There is a 42 willys and a korean war jeep, they come from the mountains near Bright. They both sustained damage during the fires a couple of years ago. one of the jeeps has the whole rear section burnt out.
The trailers are in average condition.
There is a 42 Chev, military with stakeside tray still fitted with BO marker lights, they are not sure if this will go in the sale. It is not listed.
There is lots and lots of scrap. many lots are just that- scrap.
They are puting trailers/trucks and other wheeled items (all civilian old transport company items that have laid about for years) together to sell, wheels on with no grease in the bearings, etc etc.

unable to go

If any MLU'ers attend could they please take a few snaps and pass on the auction results. I think there was a listing for some mil spec tyres as well, or were they just commercial truck tyres?
Ryan

I'll be in Portland lookin' over fences. :D

From the top post, note all of these lots were plus 10% (GST)
starting with the bantam trailer, chassis OK tub R/S $950
Ben Hur (?) trailer, missing pintle ring But in very good nick $1800 (Oct 28 1943, plate is shown)
(next 2 pics) Willys "42 or '43 ( they all look the same to me) shall we say somewhat poorer than the description from vendor seemed to describe. This was one that has been a little burnt. Knocked down at $6000. Very strong rumour circulating that the vendor had the winning bid ???? Hope no one travelled too far for this one.
Tailgate and front of CJ 2A (Late 40's), chassis front and body very poor, $750
Bonneted Chev Steering box R/S, with tray and rest of parts (appeared to be all there) sold as one Lot for $2000
Mystery trailer (Searchlight, Generator?) $150
Last 2 pics are just extras of the bantam and 42 jeep
Rich.

Jim, I thought you would have spotted that the Chev was one of those US Lend-Lease 1 1/2ton trucks you mentioned in the WW2 Photos thread. Still has the original tray:

Chev Truck

Hi Tony
Yes it appears to be the lend lease type , cab style , front bumper and of course the tray .
Looks as if it was fairly complete before the dismantling , the tray is in good condition ( especially the iron work ) which makes them stand out from the regular trays and are hard to find.
Good buy at $ 2000 for both seller and buyer.
Regards
Jim S.

big prices

Wow, wasn't expecting prices that high.
Thanks Richard for the pics and info.

prices

Those prices have my head spinning . A few short years back I was offered a nice L/L Chev like that , on a farm since 1961 , going cond. , for $500 . It was up at Glenrowan , near Wang. If you look through the mags like Just Cars or Unique cars at the newsagents, there are soooo many L/L Chevs for sale , they ask stupid prices for them , up into the multi thousands .

I even see stuff like Holden EJ sedans are now demanding ridiculous money .... whats going on ? Not long ago, they were worth 50 bucks each at a scrap yard . We seem to in the middle of a collector craze for anything pre 1970 . I've even seen.... XB Falcons are now in the classic car era .

Mike

classics

XB's are over 25 yrs old Mike. So very soon even early XF Falcons and VK Commodores will be classics!
You know a few years ago I could have bought a '42 Willys jeep ( the body was wood from the drivers seat back) for $160. Oh well. Live and learn.

Lynn Eades 05-05-08 12:50

Mike

Its about demographics. What we (baby boomers) dreamed about, when we were young, some of us are buying now. There are a lot of baby boomers, so there's a big demand for those things.

Old stuff

I have an XA Fairmont that I will restore just as soon as the F15 is finished. The project, I suspect, will cost me more than a low km current model Fairmont. But look at them. 70's sedans were a thing of styling beauty! So much more charcter & style than my current drive, a 10 year old Fairlane...
Remember when you could pick ap a fairly handy blitz for a few beers?
(Yoiks! I am getting old! :giveup)
