Why you don't rip people off on the internet

Came across this on another site and it had me hooked. It's a very long read but worth it.

Holy crap ... I read page one only to see there are 72 more pages to that post!!! Don't think I will read the rest ... but ... :D

(Interesting reading, that first page, for sure ... :D )

Keith Webb 21-12-07 21:02

Long read

I managed to get to page 6... but it's a good example of a complete absence of forum moderation... I wonder what the average IQ of the posters is. What a bunch of hotheads.

Ryan can you please precis the rest for us? By page 6 he had apparently sent the used gears, admitted they weren't new, and upset most members of the forum to boot. I think it contains more americanisms as used by rappers and bad guys than I've ever seen in one place.

Ryan 21-12-07 23:47

lol.
Yeah, I'll admit I didn't read the whole thing. I started skimming after page 15 or so.
It's scary really, just turns into a free-for-all. They relatively quickly get a hold of the guys private info which is eventually posted, track down where he lives, dig up old school photos of him, multiple people threaten him. The news of his actions spreads to multiple boards, a myspace page is made of him, even bumper stickers are made!
It gets to the point that page after page is just people blabbing on about how they are enjoying reading the thread. Even old classmates join in.
In the end the gears are sent back to the seller because they weren't "new", and original money sent is returned. But that was after the police became involved.

Goggle Charlie Wenzel.

So glad I live in sleepy hollow.

Keith Webb 21-12-07 23:58

Excellent!

Here's his apology thread.

forum harrasment

Gee who do we get to pick on in such a horrific manner here?

And to think that there were times that I thought perhaps I was a bit rough on Mike Greeley.

Nothing like this. I can't believe that their moderators didn't step in.

Hi Boss.

It took me 2 hours, but I got to page 22. Sorely tempted to skip to p72 to see how it winds up, but that would be like reading the last page of an Agatha Christie whodunnit.

Except Agatha Christie doesn't speak jive :nono:

I read the entire thing in one fail swoop.

Very long and very immature at times by users who came on just to chime in.

Good to see the guy got what he deserved, but getting his mom, dad, sister, co-workers dragged into it was going a bit far.

Got to the point where people were posting his phone number, address, map to his house, where he works, his truck with license plate in full view, how much his house was worth, school pictures from sophomore to senior high....even his kindergarten pictures.

Kinda scary.

Regards

I didn't but skipped through it to the end. It was an interesting lesson, though... the whole thing kind of sums up the negative side of the whole "internet experience".

It just seemed a lot of very nasty hot air safely expended in place of a good, ol'-fashioned stonk. In truth, although the idiot deserved much of it, the abuse went way too far. Whatever happened to simply taking the offender out into the bushes for a "talk"? :rolleyes

Pedr 23-12-07 00:42

In a similar vain....

Don't we have a similar thread in the Carrier forum????

Something about track pins???

ooohhhh let's hope that ones settled before it gets this ugly.

It won't, and neither will any other thread here. :)

Google Charlie Wenzel.

Finished reading all 73 pages of posts! Square eyes.

Young Charlie certainly had his situation highlighted to the world. Back in Nov 2005, this flashed around the world with the thread on Pirate 4x4 receiving over 750,000 reads (!!!!) and the story being linked to about 100 other forums where much more was written (Why weren't we told!!!). Emails were sent to his prospective College, and Naval and Mil recruiters where he had expressed an interest.

Despite that, and all the threats, he may have survived all the fuss and become a Hero! In Oct 2007, we find Young Charlie stepping in to break up a knife fight and getting himself stabbed. He survived!

I think interesting and intelligent people attract other interesting and intelligent people. Hence the MLU forum.
For everyone else, there is Pirate 4X4. It speaks volumes for Human Nature.
